So I decided to cut open my oil filter to see what it looked like on the inside. (duh)

(^That was my reaction.) That's what the Anti drain back valve looked like when I took off the cover. And in the next pic you can see how the rubber valve has seated into the wrong position all this time. The rubber itself was stiff but not brittle.

Now onto the filter element.....yeah, you can clearly see a sizable hole (giggity) there.

The Endcap had cracks around the inner side, the pic below shows the largest ones.

The spring was still very stiff and in good condition.

The car is an 2006 Daihatsu Terios. The oil this filter was put with was M1 15w50 because the owners manual said That I could use it for this climate. BUT while I was using this combination of oil and filter, every cold start the engine had a lot of valve noise like starting the car with an empty oil filter due to a bad ADBV like seen in the previous pics. Not to mention that the oil was a little on the thick side. This oil was drained after about 5k miles because one morning I checked my oil and and it was black as [censored] and below the add line on the dipsick. I changed the oil to Valvoline Synpower 10w30 and a Wix Filter. The valve noise is virtually gone at ANY start up.
But I have a feeling that this filter is probably a fake because I've heard on here that if the filter says 'Made in Japan' than the filtering material would be different than this one. Correct me if I'm wrong. The end of the filter WAS wrapped in plastic when it was new.

Its not the filter. His oil is WAY too thick. He has a "15w" cold starting weight which is impacting the hydraulics of the vvt-i controller. No oil pressure is causing it to remain in the "locked" startup position until the oil pressure builds. Then it unlocks, moves to the correct position, and the noise goes away.

wow, that looks pretty awful! I do wonder if it's a knock-off, made in Bangladesh version? Here's the same filter:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2126028

I realize there are running changes and the OEM's use different manufacturers, so the filter may have just changed and you got unlucky. However, the quality is SO poor that I have to wonder if it wasn't a counterfeit filter.

As far as the hole, I wonder if despite the condition of the spring, the bypass just wasn't working?

That's my car in the video. And the owners manual says that I can use a 20w50 oil if I wanted to for this climate. I only had 15w50 synthetic on hand. I always use synthetic.

However I do think that the thicker oil helped worsen the noise, so that's why I just said [censored] it and wen't back the the manufacturers factory fill of 10w30.

Ok. I'm shocked a Toyota engine would specify that weight in any country. You could have a faulty controller lock pin. There are TSB's out on that. See if you can find it. But for the sake of verifying oil pressure at startup, I don't see the harm in running something thinner for a while. Sounds like your doing that.

There should be a filter/screen before the OCV. Dig that out and clean it.

I work at a shop and we where able to get some hastings filters that had plastic wrap on them only they where made in china.I never cut one open but they where real heavy,my point is i dont think genuine filters come with just plastic around the base.

Sounds like you had a knock off filter but the real problem was the oil thats way to heavy i would never run anything higher than 10w30 in any newer vehicle unless diesel.

Doubt that has anything to do with it. He lives in Venezuela, not Antarctica. If what you say were the case then VVT-i equipped vehicles that have cold start temperatures below 30F would always have this noise, even using 5w-30.

Bad filter was all it was.

In the fords even going from 5w20 to 5w30 will affect this.

I'm not any kind of expert on Toyota filters, but I thought the made-in-Japan ones had that weird-looking sponge-like media...I also thought they had silicone ADBVs. That filter looks like it spent 30,000 miles on a badly-maintained diesel in Libya.

If that was true, than a 10 degree drop in temp would cause it. Viscosity is temperature dependant.

Lots of unknowns and variables here. Looking at the media blow out and the endcap cracks, I'm wondering if your oil pump relief valve malfunctioned, ie., stuck closed. Lots of pressure required to cause the cracks.

Doesn't look like the same oem factory filter river rat posted, but really hard to tell if it's "counterfeit". These things change so fast and 'perhaps' even differ from country to country.

Does the bypass valve push down evenly/smoothly with pressure? How did you cut the the filter open? Any chance the adbv displacement was caused by cutting it open?

You might find the linked filter thread interesting in what appears to be a stuck relief valve. Honestly though, like others I'm just spitballing here.

The bypass valve is very stiff and it breaks if I squeeze the 2 ends together, but its not brittle.

That's how it looked like when I opened the filter and you can see on the valve how the rubber has 'molded' itself into the incorrect position all this time.

I opened the filter with a Dremel, right at the base, nowhere the filter element.

Not sure what you mean by bypass 'breaks if you squeeze it together but not brittle'.

This thread shows some pics of a functional bypass valve.

As theorized previously, maybe it's from a defective oil filter bypass valve.

If you pinch it, it will break. I'm talking about the ADBV BTW. I'll check out the bypass valve right now.

You had a bad filter thats what caused the noise as you know because now its quiet, it seems obvious.
The oil viscosity was well within manufacturers specs for your environment, thicker oil is generally a non issue in VVT systems anyway.

The hole in the filter probably let some junk float around in the engine, i would definitely clean the VVT filter screen if it uses one (it probable does). Its usually not a big job.

Here's a pic of the bypass valve after I cleaned it. The spring was still strong. And there was no noticeable deposits in the valve itself.

A bad filter for sure. Probably a counterfeit. The bypass spring cage looks poorly made. Nothing like that will come out of Japan. Some one was making these for $3 and selling them for $15-25, that is the retail of that part number. It says Made in Japan, and I am a Alien from the Sirius star cluster. Doesn't make it true.

There are splits in the metal in the fourth photograph. Unless you caused them by accident, this does not look like a Toyota filter. Also the base plate does not look kosher.

I think in Venezuela 15W-50 oil will work fine, unless mostly the vehicle is driven at the higher altitudes, of which Venezuela has some that beat anything in the USA outside of Alaska. But I don't know if you drive to the highlands.

Where do you drive and how cold does it get? Valencia is on the coast.

The filter had about 5k miles on it. The temperature here is in the 90's and I always have to red line it to get any power out of it. I only have 83 BHP.

He changed the filter and the oil weight at the same time? If so the findings are inconclusive. My response was to that video. What exactly was making that noise. startup vvt-i controller tick is well known. It can be caused by oil weight, clogging of the controller and clogged or defective oil filter that has a bypass/adbv problem, etc. Oil weight as in the speed the controller can gain hydraulic oil pressure after the engine has started. A thick oil may take a second or two to flow through the narrow oil gallies of the vvt-i system, hence the 1-2 second tick tick. But once its running, there is no ill effect of a thicker oil. Looking at the recommended weights on that sheet 5w30 looks fine to me. Its gone now so thats all that matters.

Here is a thread about my car and the adventures we did on it. WITH the bad filter in place.

I'm going to stick with the manufacture's factory fill of 10w30 until I move to someplace colder IF I do that. But now since the noise is gone I will keep using 10w30 Synthetic.

great pics. I agree with others in thinking that is a counterfeit denso filter.

that or denso quality control has going seriously down hill.

I think a quality 30 or 40 weight would serve you well.

very interesting to see the viscosity spread in the owner manual. As long as it is slippery your good to go!

More and more when I look at the base plate and rubber seal I think the F-Bomb word: FAKE.

My understanding is that the Japanese Denso are the ones with the spongey filter material, and the Densos with this type of setup are made in Thailand. Which makes me suspect this as a fake as well.

I was also under the impression the Toyota-branded Thailand Denso were endcap-free, while the Denso-branded ones had metal endcaps.

Both of those facts suggest to me that this was a fake Japanese Denso, since the spongey-type media ones are in somewhat high demand and command a premium price.

FWIW, I buy the Denso-branded Thailand-made filters for my Honda vehicles on RockAuto. If you play around with the number of units, you can minimize the shipping price per unit if you decide to go that route.

I like them better (my opinion only. not trying to start a debate) than the Toyota-branded ones because they have Silicon ADBV's and metal endcaps.

I would say-stick with silicone ADBV filters in the future-with the heat you run in, nitrile would harden up like it's on Viagra!

Do all Wix filters have silicone ADBV's?

The 'non heat-shield section' of the exhaust manifold surrounds the filter so it is always next to some high temps.

I might try a Vega filter in the future aswell.

No, some are using nitrile, at least currently.

What's the difference? Silicone is orange and Nitrile is a pinkish color? Or black?

Denso has very, very high manufacturing standards. No sarcasm. I couldn't believe that was a Denso filter since it had all those defects.

That filter is not looking like it's Denso spec. I didn't even know counterfeit filters existed? I guess I do now.

All the silicone ADBVs I've seen in person have been orange or reddish. I believe Royal Purple's filters use a purple silicone. The nitrile ADBVs I've seen are black.

The only thing that looked at all reasonable on that filter was the paint job. Everything else looked cobbled together.

I ran Mobil 1 15-50WT in a new 1989 Honda Prelude for 280K miles without any problems. I lived in Arizona and Southern California.

If I dropped down to the 10-30WT I would burn about 1 quart between oil changes (5000 Miles OCI) so I stepped back up to the 15-50WT.

I wonder what reaction a person would get if they posted they were running Castrol 10-60WT?

I may have missed it here, but what is the efficiency rating of Toyota OEM filters?

Per the Amsoil comparison chart showing the ISO 4548-12 testing, the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 was 51% @ 20 microns.

See chart at the bottom of this page:

Almost certainly a counterfeit.

Where did you purchase that filter, or have the car serviced.

I would contact Toyota Venezuela corporate and inform them about this.

Informing of the source of the product may get good attention and/or feedback either way.

LOL Toyota of Venezuela can kiss my [censored]. Bunch of crooks and I need to write a book about what [censored] they do here.

In other words they do that all the time with parts like that.

I service my car. But I did buy the filter somewhere else.

And frankly the 'Toyota' filter costs about 70% more than the wix that I bought. And the Wix has a silicone ADBV.
