How hot can I run my Mobil-1
Mobil site don't say it just talks about how it can withstand higher temperature than convectional oils. Yesterday My oil reached 295 but was only that hot for about a minute. i shut it off and let it cool. The oil looks the same feels the same and don't smell any different. Would you change it this is on a street driven car oil has 800 miles on it now.

There will be hot spots in your engine that your oil comes in contact with regularly that is a higher temperature than that. Your oil temp sensor is really only giving you the sump temperature.

That said, I have run air cooled harleys in that temp range for hours.

Your Mobil 1 is just fine, IMHO. Dumping it would just be a waste of money.

What kind of car? Is it a Turbo?

I concur; dumping it would be a waste of money. I use RL 10w-40 in a raced 94 LT1 Corvette with no oil cooler. I sustained 290+ deg temps for almost an hour, oil degradation at that temp for Mobil 1 is a non issue.

Thanks guys that makes me feel better. I normally don't see that kind of oil temp but I was flogging it pretty hard.

Shutting it off is probably worse than just slowing it down. As said above, there are areas inthe engine that are hotter than others, and just turning it off may let oil cook in those spaces.

I thought syns were good @ 350F for like an hour or so in some test?

Thanks I have never seen info on what the oil will withstand. When the oil went to 295 the water was 240. I have never seen it do that before but it was hot near 90 and I run it hard for several miles. I'm talking over 200mph when I slowed down I drove it back to town and it was down to 190 on the water and 240 on the oil. I let it sit for about a hour before starting it and the oil was still 200. It holds a total of 11 quarts of oil and when it gets hot it takes awhile for it to cool

The old overtemp lights in cars were typically set to come on at 245 deg. F. as conventional oil was thought to be in peril at 240. Synthetics should be capable of sustained 300 deg with no problems. Typically, if the oil didn't get hot enough to smoke I wouldn't worry about it. Esp. since you mention that there was no discoloration.

Out of curiosity... where exactly do you run for several miles at over 200 mph? Holy ****!!! [Eek!]

From your description it sure looks like a monster Vette.

What is overtemp light?

You guys are forgetting that API now tests all oils at 150C (~302F) for 100 hours in sequence IIIG:

Holy ****! That's quite a few modifications.

I agree with blupupher, I would have driven it nice and light around town to let it cool down - but I am still confident that your Mobil 1 is okay.

I'd love to see a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) on that thing if you are racing it. Which I can only assume you are. I mean, for the love of dog, I hope it wasn't on a highway where you went 200MPH.

What viscosity were you using? Please share [Burnout]

Old Porsche air cooled 4s used to run 250 F. on a hot day. On 30wt, dino oil.

I live in a rural area but nearby is a 4 lane road that is not used all that much little traffic on it. I usually do these runs about 5am on a Sunday morning. Deserted road. This road is 12miles long it is nice and smooth no curves it replaces old road the was hilly and lot of curves. Their were some bad wrecks on the old road so they built the new one but not much traffic on it. When it was first opened the state troopers where thick on it because it was very lucrative for them but they don't seem to hang out their as much now. This road has very limited access but it is always dangerous to run that fast but I have taken steps to reduce the risk. Much improved brakes wider wheels and tires. The tires are Y rated G-Force tires. The suspension has been modified and lowered. I understand the things about the car it is the oil that i have not kept up on. My oil temp sensor picks up the temp after it has been through the filter and through the oil cooler the 240 was what was going to the bearings so it would have been much hotter when it came from the engine but it was only at that temp for about a minute. The oil looks like it is new just a slight darkening. Once I stopped spraying Nitrous and went from 20lbs. of boost to naturally aspirated the temps became to fall. I only drive this car in the summer.about 1000 miles per year and it sits all winter I will change the oil before I put it up for the winter. The oil in it now only needs to go another 200 or so miles. I will try to keep the temp down on it till then.
Thanks everyone for the info. Lot of people here with knowledge of oil.

Is your 'Vette turbocharged or supercharged? And what was the viscosity of the oil?

You've got enough money to blow on super duper modifications for your car but you won't invest in a nice oil cooler?
