I've searched here, as well as several Honda Accord forums AND Google and am having trouble finding information on the availability of an oversized oil filter for my 1999 Honda Accord 2.3L 4cyl. I prefer Purolator PureOne filters and currently use PL14459 on the car. Purolator tech support says there is no alternative part number listed and that using anything other than what they have in their catalog could be problematic due to differences in bypass valve ratings.

The PL14459 has the following specs:
Relief Valve: 12-15 psi
O.D.: 3.15"
Height: 2.95"
Thread: M20 x 1.5

I've read the pros and cons of going oversized on the filter and am just seeing what my options are.

I've typically changed the filter every oil change, but am looking to change it ever other oil change.

I don't know if you can handle the gasket difference here (the WIX below). There are lots of Donaldson filter with the right thread and gasket, but Wix doesn't x'ref to them. L@@K here! You can try the interchange guide at http://www.pureoil.com to see if Purolator works with any of the Donaldson numbers.

Wix 51347 (Purolator L-20073) will work with zero leaks, even though it has a wider gasket compared to the L-14459

I have seen the discontinued L-24458 at SEARS and it too is also an 'oversized' Honda filter.

Here is a picture of comparisons of sizes of filters available for your car, hopefully it helps a little:

Pictured is the Purolator PL14459, PL24458 (oversized, discontinued), Amsoil EaO20, Honda A01 and HAMP filter, Napa Gold/Wix 1334, SuperTech ST3593A.

Some more comparisons of the regular Purolator for Honda cars and the oversized Purolator filters:

Isn't WIX 51334 the big brother of the stock size filter for this car ? I have used it before.
I believe there is a Baldwin that comes in the bigger size too. Cant remember the exact # right now, but you should be able to look it up easily..

The local Sears still has some L24458s left on the shelf since last two years. I am their only customer who buys them, but now I stopped since I dont want to buy a filter sitting that long on the shelf. Just personal preference. yes I got weird looks.

Nope, the 1334 is the stock filter for most Honda applications.

ydwk, is the wix 51356 what youre referring to? Its not really larger than the 51334 its just shaped different but it filters better than the 51334. Maybe the 51516 is what youre referring to? Its definitely larger but doesnt filter as good so I'd personally stick with the 51356.
