A VOA on J-D's semi-syn 0W-40 that I've just recently started using in my J-D X595 tractor (24 HP 3 cyl. Yanmar diesel).

RON: Everything looks fine in this sample of virgin 0W/40 oil. The TBN starts out strong at 9.4, which is a common reading for a new diesel use oil like this. The additive package is also strong and should do well in your tractor. No water or insolubles were found. The iron isn't a problem and neither is the silicon. Silicon at this level may be from a little anti-foam additive. The viscosity was right in the middle of the 40W range, though that will drop a little after the oil sees use (like it does with all oils). In any case, this oil is perfectly serviceable.

Interesting that the Blackstone VOA shows a TBN of 9.4. At the J-D page describing the product http://www.deere.com/en_US/parts/partsinfo/oils_and_lubricants/oil_0w40.html they note a TBN of 12.8. Seems like quite a difference!!

Even with the TBN discrepency, I'm still really impressed with this oil! Love that add-pack with moly and boron. This oil 'looks' a lot like M1 0W-40, the add pack seems similar in that it uses both those elements, but it also has the advantage of the high Zinc number.

We're looking at stocking up on this for our other J-D diesel equipment as well, especially since the local J-D guy is having a January lube/filter sale right now.

We'd been using Rotella "T" 5w-40, but, the numbers from this http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1040289#Post1040289 VOA seems to show the "T" getting a bit weak in the ZDDP's as it were. Maybe we're over-worrying about nothing as regards the T's numbers, but, those J-D diesels aren't cheap to fix. We'd really rather not take a chance.

Hmmm. I have a stash of CI-4+ "T" 5-40, maybe I'll send some of that out for a VOA before I hide from the falling sky.

How much is this oil??

Sorry daman, just worked my way back here. J-D lubes seem to vary dramatically in price, based on your location. Here in SW PA, the last I checked, 0W-40 runs between $4.50 and $5.50/qt, depending on whether you buy it by the quart or in 5 gallon buckets.

Not to bad if it's turns out to be a good oil..

You're right - the J-D site says "100 percent synthetic base oil", but the bottle I have under my desk (I like to keep one handy!!!) says "synthetic blend". I dunno??

Stupid question - would this oil be OK on my 5.7L Toyota gasser? It's an '07 Tundra, calls for 0W20 but dealer puts in 0W30.

i think it would be a great choice,if your outa warranty sure go for it,mileage may suffer just a bit but besides that no problem,i know a guy running 15w40 in his '05.
