Should automakers offer bypass filter set ups as an option on vehicles?

Probably not. I think though that even I wouodn't get it. Unless you are going to do long drain intervals, why bother. And another thing is that I still wonder if it can mask problems in an engine. Will it remove lots of particles that could alert you of incipient wear/failure. Not sure this has ever been answered (on this board anyway). I am pretty well into a 6K mile oil change at this point.

w123 MB diesels got one standard...

Oneof the only cars that can go to 500k... forget honda forget toyota... MB diesels are the epitome of longevity, this likely being part of the reason.

Yeah, it'd be nice as part of a trailer-towing/heavy-duty package.

One of Doug Hillary's set-ups: full-flow stainless-mesh filter with a remote centrifuge (operating off of engine oil pressure) and an oversized sump with windage tray. Along with auxilary coolers and in-line filters for PSF and ATF.
