Trying to locate a replacement engine for a 10 year old Harbor Freight Chipper, with ...
Engine Family: 7YJ GS, 1631YC, EM
0.55 gallon, 5.5 HP, OHV Gas Engine

Based on this link, this is the current engine

There are 3 Horizontal Shaft 6.5 hp engines on sale for 120, what would be easiest to figure out which one works?

Take the old motor off your unit and measure the shaft height from the deck, shaft, and the distance between the mounting holes of your and their new 6.5hp units. They probably will be the same as your old one. Then bolt it up and got to town.,,,

Those harbor freight engines will fit fine. The 196cc -212cc engines all pretty much have the same shaft sizes and mounting bases, so they are pretty universal. The CARB (California Air Resource Board) engine will run very lean due to California emissions, so I would avoid that one.

The other two engines are basically the same. You'll pretty much find that your local store will only stock one type of 6.5HP 212cc engine, even though the website lists 3.

Whats wrong with your current engine? If it just needs a carburetor, the Chinese clone engine carburetors can usually be found for $10-$15.

Any engine with the same power rating, same shaft height from the motor mount plate and same shaft diameter can be made to work very easily. If you can't find an exact replacement the modifications to get a different motor in there still aren't too bad, usually just changing the mounting height of the motor. Shaft sizes are pretty standardized.
