purpose of holes in ohtsu fp7000

Clunker rolled home behind me on these. I could post a pic but found a better one online:

There aren't enough holes for winter studs, and mine have kind of a squarish bottom, like a Robinson drive.

I figure they're there as a remnant of the assembling process, and have nothing to offer traction wise. But, why are they there?

Tire rotation time indicators. The round holes will turn completely square when it's time to rotate.

The Ohtsu FP7000 id the same tire as Pep Boys' Falken Ziex ZE-329
 
The Falken Sincera tires on my wife's car has these. Not sure how to handle them since I only bought a pair and am waiting for the older tires to be totally unacceptable before putting on new ones. So it's not going to have a normal rotation pattern since the old tires will have had a head start regarding wear.
