My cars don't have fuel filters. Just a screen at the fuel pump. I want to add a filter on the fuel lines. Is there a reason why I shouldn't?

Good idea! There's no reason why you shouldn't, and many reasons why you should.

Old mechanical fuel pump mounted on the block ?
First thing we every did back in the day was install a Ryco Z14KA

Pumps are in the gas tanks.
