Hello! New to the forum. I have a 1953 Farmall Super C tractor that I am rebuilding the transmission & rear-end in with all new bearings and seals. I am not the original owner of the tractor. According the manual it says to use 80wt SAE oil. Now here is where my question comes in. What type of gear oil would go into this transmission and rear-end as it all one unit. I have read that GL5 is not to be used since there is a little brass in the rear-end and the additives will attack it. Dealer recommends HY-tran but I think it is a little thin and of course way over priced. Does anyone else have a Farmall and what is the correct oil to run in this tractor?

Thanks,
Joe

I suspect GL5 would be fine, but if it makes you uncomfortable, I know that NAPA 80W90 is GL4/GL5 rated.

Welcome to the forum, Joe.

Hy-Tran is not ideal here.
Dual rated GL-5/MT-1 gear oil is what you're after, which is fine with brass.
85w-140 would be my viscosity of choice. Do not add grease to the fluid (thickening agent).

JoeFarmer,

Please check your messages; I talked to my friend, who is a Farm Implement mechanic (since the early 80's). Sent you his opinion....

Best of luck.
