expat, great link (got the Peugeot engine that inspired the Offy as well).

Another thing in favour of the F head was the very cool inlet valve remote from the plug with the spark over the hot exhaust made it more resistant to detonation.

Maybe pre- ignition, As for detonation . This design would be terrible. .

I do happen to remember that the 'Big' 6 cyl Rovers required 101 octane

But 'that' F head was more like a Hemi

The true F heads would likely had bad thermal efficiency, that might counter detonation.

When tested, it was said to cause alarm 15 miles away!!

By detonation, I take it that you mean end gas autoignition ?

My comment still stands.

Getting the fire over in the vicinity of the exhaust valve, and having it move to a cooler area is better for detonation...flame still has to traverse the chamber to the quench area.
