On my Escort 1.3 last few days oil pressure light stays on for a 5 sec on a morning start up.Later in a day it will go out after 2 sec.Oil and filter are 4 months old with 4k km on them.Is it safe to run like this to the next OCI or should i change them immediately? Thanks!

Even after installing a new and dry filter, or the worst case possible for a suspected failed ADBV, I've never had an oil pressure light to stay on for five seconds after the first start. I suspect something else might be going on here. It wouldn't hurt to change the filter, but that seems like an awfully long time until you get oil pressure...long enough where I think maybe you've got a "lazy" oil pressure switch or sending unit in the engine.

5 Seconds is a long time even for a failed ADBV. Try a new filter but if that doesn't help it may have a failing oil pressure sending unit IIRC it is next to the oil filter on this car.
The sending unit is cheap on this car and you need to remove it anyway for an oil pressure test.
If the sender doesn't help either its time to do a oil pressure test cold through hot at various RPM to get to the root of the problem.

I wouldn't drive it until i got to the bottom of this, if a pump or bearing is going out driving it will only do more damage and may make something that may be easily repairable now much more difficult and expensive.

Thanks guys for response.Ford is 21 year old with 190k. and it has slight bottom knock.I would like to use it for a year or two around town before scrapping it.Tomorrow will change oil and filter, and see if it helps. If problem stays i'll change OP switch.

"slight bottom knock" - Go to a thicker oil, preferably a synthetic to make it live. M1 15W-50 or even a 5W-40 HDEO synthetic. It's likely not the switch, just a worn out engine. Drive gently and it might live for a while.

This is quite possibly the reason behind the oil pressure light being on for 5 seconds.
When you first start it cold does it knock a little louder then quieten down a little?

I had that issue once on my 2.2 with a side mount filter. Usually when the adbv failed it would rattle. One filter that did it caused the 5 second delay in oil pressure but no start up rattle. I would only do that if it sat for more than a day. I have separate pressure circuits for the gauge and the light switch and both showed no pressure. Try another brand of filter. The problem never came back.

@Trav: No,not really.Knock is persistent from cold start until motor warm up.It isn't loud and i don't think is main bearing, more like piston conrod top.Just took the car to the store but before starting pulled Ecu fuse. After 5 sec of cranking OP light went off.On my way back (was in a store only for few minutes) pressure light went off immediately. @ sprite:eek:n this engine filter is mounted horizontally, and i did have similar issue with my AR 164 v6 years ago but nothing this bad.

Changed oil and filter few hours ago and just went out to start car.Pressure light stays on for 2 sec so it's probably worn engine and pump, not filters ADBV.It will go off quicker then before with new oil but problem is still here.Old filter were Valeo and it looked much better quality then new made by Champion.

The oil pressure light being on for 2 sec on start-up isn't going to hurt anything.

Was that right after the oil change with a new dry filter installed? What about a start-up after the engine has been ran and the filter is full of oil?

No 2 sec OP light was after the car has been run with new oil. It's an improvement, before OC light stayed for 4-5 sec so i'm happy
