I currently sell new cars for a living. Sure, they are nice. I really have no desire to own a new vehicle. As a matter of fact, if I could find a good used Chevy LUV or S10 in decent shape that I could purchase cheaply, I would buy it and sell my 2006 low-milege Colorado. Automobiles are just an appliance to me.

I do see a NEED, to replace my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan though. At 176k one-owner miles, it is getting a bit tired. Starting to sound a little rough. It has been maintained and tuned up as needed, including new plugs and wires about 25k miles ago. I will probably keep it till it blows up. It would be nice to think I could get another 40k-50k miles out of it. Perhaps I can.

Occasionally, I will check rebates and with the discounts I can get, it almost seems stupid not to buy. I just don't purchase based on "new car fever" though. After eight years of ownership, my van seems boring, but it serves its purpose.

Find a 1982-1984 Dodge Rampage pickup, you'll be getting 30mpg,be able to carry something, and look cool doing it.And still have FWD traction and handling,as opposed to a seriously out of balance S10/Ranger/LUV RWD.

New cars are pretty depressing, mostly.

That toyotabaru FRZ thing not withstanding.

The problem I have with new cars is how ridiculously complicated they have become with all the electronics. I don't think they will have the same lifespan of older simpler vehicles.

Seriously? All those are are just POS K-cars with a small bed. I have not seen a Chrysler K-car is years. I figured they all have fallen apart or rusted out.

They do serve a valid purpose when you can keep them running and not let the earth reclaim them with rust, lol.

Finally a post that makes sense.

I don't like new cars either, that's why I went with a Civic, no pointless gadgetry and plain nice styling.

Also reliable and high resale value helps.

I thought they were L-bodies like Ominis. Come to think of it, I haven't seen any of those either in a while and they used to be ALL OVER the place, like tempos and escorts.

A guy in my town built a turbo rampage for the GRM $2000 challenge many years ago. It's a little crude inside compared to a new car, but it's quick and light and the suspension is the same design as many new cars.

I have never seen a Dodge Rampage, ever, and I rarely see similar cars such as the VW Rabbit truck and Subaru BRAT. It makes me think that there is something wrong with the concept.

Nothing wrong with the concept. The ElCamino remains a very popular vehicle and it ceased to be produced in 1987. Every time GM starts promising that they will bring us the Holden Ute as the new El Camino, many in the car forums get very excited. GM always lets us down....maybe next year.

Price was a problem. The Rampage was something like $1000 more than the Dodge D50. I forgot how much the Rabbit pickup was but I'm fairly certain that it was more than the Rampage. The car based trucklings needed to be priced closer to the cars they were based on.
Hard to sell a Rampage when the D50 is $1000 less and the Omni it's based on is $1500 less

I think a Rampage type vehicle would be an excellent choice for an ocassional hauler that gives you FWD and good fuel economy.

For me:
Cars: 10 years old or less for a DD. 20 years old trash beater.
Trucks: About five years old at average or lower mileage. Older despite mileage might have problems.

That's my used vehicle buying experience so far. First time bought new was not satisfied with purchase.

As in any purchase...as long as it performs as it did when you 1st bought it, and when you approach it at the curb, if it still appeals to you like it did when you first laid eyes on it, you're a lucky owner...

Your 05 Caravan has lots of life left in it. Our shop has a 99 Plymouth Voyager with the 3.3L in its fleet that has almost 285,000miles on it and still runs great. Has had nothing but Napa or Chevron Supreme dino oil and OCOD filters since new and runs like a top. The amazing part is the transmission has maybe been serviced twice in the 13yrs I've worked there, as far as I know and quite honestly, still shifts ok. Other than an alternator, rear hub, waterpump, and power steering pump, I don't think its every had any other repairs made to it, other than the usual wear items. It started life as one of our parts salesmans work van, and when he retired about 9 or 10 yrs ago, the shop got it and it gets used for short trips to pick up customers trucks.
