The manual says to use Type TII. So what do others use since I'm sure this is not available anymore. I've heard Toyota automatics are fussy when it comes to using the proper fluid.

Don't really want to do a full syn, on a high mileage trans. But then I suppose what ever the expensive Toyota stuff is its probably a full syn.

MAXLIFE

DEX/MERC ATF
Valvoline MaxLife

DEX/MERC ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) is the first fluid of its kind that is specifically formulated for
the
broadest range of
today’s technologically sophi
sticated automatic transmissions. It is formulated with
synthetic
base stocks,
unique seal conditioners, long
-
life friction modifiers, special anti
-
wear additives, and shear stable viscosity modifiers, among other
components
to fight the four major cause
s
of transmission breakdown:
leaks, slippage, shudder and gear wear.
Valvoline has conducted
extensive
in
-
house testing, independent lab testing, and field
-
testing to support MaxLife ATF performance
in the broadest range of transmissions; however, it
shou
ld be noted
that
MaxLife ATF is not a OEM licensed product. The r
espective
vehicle manufacturers have neither evaluated nor
endorsed
MaxLife ATF in these applications.
If an OEM licensed product is
preferred we recommend Valvoline DEXRON® VI, Valvoline AT
F+4® and Valvoline MERCON®V for the
corresponding applications.

If you're concerned about cost with a synthetic, some Wal-Mart stores carry Maxlife for $17 a gallon, and you can often ship site-to-store for that same price. Most parts stores have it for less than $25

$17 for a gallon of Maxlife ATF? My Wal-mart does not carry it, so I wouldn't know but that price seems too good to be true.

+1 for Max life. I use it on my 98 Sienna. Some with the newer Toyotas with the Type IV fluid are worried about running Max life in their tranny.

Regards, JC.

Bit of coup there Steve! I see ML is now back available for Wally ship to home, ~$20 shipped, to my door. Hasn't been available for shipment for quite some time. ~$3 less/gal. than AAP in store price. Not as good as when Wally had the $.99 shipping promo but not too shabby if one doesn't live near one of the selected Wally stores that carry ML or an AAP.

also are you getting Valvoline Max Life?

I would b.c its synthetic

Castrol is DINO

WHAT Toyota do you have? (year/model)

Most of their automatics more than 10 years old (before they came outwith T-IV) just use Dexron.

My 96 ES300 (Camry) calls for Dexron III.

You can probably use almost any ATF out there. Maxlife is great stuff. Don't be scared of it being synthetic: remember, anything with the Maxlife name on it is designed with high mileage cars in mind.

I like Mag 1 ATF myself. Search "Mag 1 64092" on Amazon. It's only $4 per quart.

If there is a Target nearby, they carry Mobil ATF D/M. It's a basic Dexron III non-synthetic ATF that will work great. It is also cheaper than Walmart's house brand ATF.

The store that carries Maxlife is actually about 15 minutes away.

It's going in the Ody, since it's time for the annual cooler line exchange, and the inline magnetic filter needs replacing.

The xB is a manual, currently running Motul Gear 300.

Often you can get real Toyota T-IV from Carquest, and T-IV was created as a perfect replacement for Toyota Type II. I don't see any infor on the bottle saying if it is synthetic, I am fairly sure it is conventional.
