Does that filter have an o-ring seal on a tube (can't remember). Sometimes the old one sticks up in the orifice.

Maybe check around real well for any loose wires. There is a speed sensor that sits on top of the transaxle that could be the culprit, but I would think that a code would be thrown for it.

Good luck.

Yeah according to the owners manual its supposed to have a Mercon type compatible fluid. I put in a Mercon type ATF by Shell. AS for the filter I used a Wix filter and Gasket Kit. The filter had the o-ring on it and I'm pretty sure I placed it properly up in the intake hole...it only went in one way and all 3 fasterns were screwed in properly as well. There was a 2 wire cord going across the tranny but I never touched that so It shouldn't have come loose. I do have a can of Seafoam Trans-Tune in my garage that I was thinking of throwing in...

You know what I'm going to go through my garbage tomorrow and find the old filter to make sure the o-ring is still on it. I'm pretty sure I saw it on the stem of the filter when removing it.

When I google Ford Escort Shift Problems numerous topics come up on the FEOA (Ford Escort Owners) site for you to explore. One follows up with detailed instructions to check ALL of the electrical connections. Other ideas include the speed sensor, throttle position sensor, and a cable that controls tranny fluid pressure.

Hopefully it is something simple tied to the service you just performed (a bump or loosening of something). The stuck/lost O-ring. It happens all the time.

I don't know about the Sea Foam, but LubeGard Red get's the o.k. at BITOG and some report miracle cures.

Let us know the final outcome.

oh hey look at that the Escort has its own forum. Thanks didn't know about that. I have been on a few Ford Forums with not much help, but maybe I will find someone with some similar problems. doitmyself Thank you!.

I really hope I don't have to drop the pan again. That was a P-I-T-A by itself.

I use Dexron III in my 1995 Escort, Walmart brand and it works just fine.

Also, your transmission has the transmission oil pressure externally adjustable via a cable, so it's easy enough to bump up. Although the right way to do it is with a gauge.

This has been discussed many times over at http://www.feoa.net

I have over 208K miles on my 1995LX's original automatic transmission, and the one in your 1997 is essentially the same.
