preferably free, for 2012 outback. i was able to buy them for $5 off ebay for my 2005 altima a few years back and those were even available for free pdf download.
but when i bought the outback i asked about getting the service manuals and the salesman & service people said they were not available. helm.inc does not do subaru, and i don't want chiltons or haynes.

Both of these claim to be the factory service manual. I've purchased several like this off ebay, and they all turned out to be PDF versions of the factory manuals.

I've never heard of a car maker that didn't release factory service manuals for their vehicles. I would guess the people at your local dealer didn't know what they were talking about when they told you they aren't available. But, I'm just guessing.

I tried to get a paper service manual for my Subaru, but it turned out to be ridiculously expensive (something like $400 IIRC, vs about $70 for the previous Honda one I bought). The website (linked by SubLGT) turns out to be a pretty good deal, but it does take some commitment. The manual for my WRX was divided up into something like 700 PDFs, and they have a limit of 50 downloads per half hour, or per hour, or something.

I got a firefox extension that would let me bulk download and just ran it every hour until I was finished over a weekend. The 3 day subscription is much cheaper than any real factory service manual book from a dealer.
