Same oil for the life of the car, Mobil 1, 5w40. 0w40 is just now showing up on store shelves here, and I will go to it at the next oil change.

Looks like you were previously running the old Tri-Synthetic formula, while the latest is the M1 with SuperSyn formula.

Ah, that could very well be!

Something is wrong. No way M1 5W-40 can be beaten to a low 30 wt. or high 20 wt.

Please clarify.

Well, I take that back. The turbo must be really beatin' the crap out of the oil.

DOH! My bad, I have been using 5w30 (not 5w40)since the first oil change on the car.
How can you tell it was a low30wt or high 20wt?

Keycom, I can tell from the viscosity in Cst. @ 100C. This is normal for 5W-30 range. Look at the viscosity chart on the Homepage for more info.

I'm not a VW guy, but the Copper is up significantly and the lead slightly, have you had your foot in it a bit harder on this run?? Is 5W-30 recommended for this engine or is there alternative recommendations.

I autocross monthly, but I did last year as well. The latest VW requirements say 0w40, but the manual says 5w30 is acceptable. VW has gone to 0w40 to help out with their "sludge" problem in the turbo. I've been using up my cache of 5w30 5-qt jugs in the meantime. 0w40 next time around though.

If you would like to try something other than Mobil 1, I would look at either German Castrol 0W30 or Belgian Castrol 5W40.

VW Jetta 1.8T, I was just a little curious about the differences showing in the numbers for magnesium, moly and the Vis@100C. Anything thing else that stands out?

Thanks everyone.

What else stands out? Why is the copper almost 3x higher in the later sample? Any mechanical changes to this engine? Is the earlier run on a different oil? Maybe that's why the moly is different. But hey, I'm no chemist, I'm just learning this stuff myself. Let's see what the voices of experience may have to say.
