Let's see what you got!

List and brief reason why.

1. Ford modular (2v, 3v, 4v) : They respond so well to boost!

2. Small block Ford: Crusin' in my 5.0. Legendary. Easy to work on. So many parts.

3. New 5.0 Ford: sick power. A magazine did no other mods to the new Boss except for a Kenne Bell blower and made 785 to the wheels. Amazing.

4. Small block Chevy: Limitless.

5. Toyota JZ: Great power, especially in turbo form. Think highway purpose Supra. Blow your doors off.

Big Block Chevy-Torque

Small block Chevy-Nearly the same design for more than 50 years.parts availability/durability.

Pontiac 455-Torque

Buick 455-Torque

Oldsmobile 455-Torque

Currently own all except Big Block Chevy...but I'm working on it.

In no particular order:

Cadillac Northstar - Addicting high-rpm power.

Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 - First modern OHV V-8 engine.

Toyota AR-series I-4 - Impossibly smooth for an I-4 engine.

Honda J-series V-6 - Thick mid-range and high-rpm power. VTEC kicked in, yo!

Any of BMW's I-6s - Do I really need to list a reason?

Small Block Ford - especially with stroker kits and good heads
now available
Flathead Ford - first engine I ever rebuilt

Small block Chev - hate Chevys but it's a great engine

MGB - except for the carbs it was bullet proof

GE J-79 - the sound takes back to my days between
the cats on Enterprise

My mechanic guru who drag raced a '56 T-bird with a supercharged 312 told me "Any fool can make a Chevrolet go fast, it takes a man to make a Ford run". Don't know what that says about fans of either brand.

Nissan VQ-series.

Consistent award-winner, smooth, excellent power output, extremely reliable. Makes a great noise.

I would like to read more about this engine and see photos. Google doesn't give me good results.

Small block Mopar (Magnum generation in particular) - tons of low end torque, cylinders on mine look brand new at just under 119k miles

Big block Chevy - Lots of torque, holds up well under marine use

Jeep 4.0 - Indestructable, dead flat torque curve

Onan CCK/MCCK flathead boxer twin - Lasts forever, runs like a tank, sounds cool, easy to work on

International DT466 - Lasts forever, great torque, wet sleeve

In the old daze:

Chevy big block... nuff said

Chevy small block... same story

Ford 390... a mountain mover

Pontiac sd455... the BEST on low octane fuel ever built

Newer stuff... 6.1 liter Mopar... low volume purpose built engine every bit equal to/better than the old 426 Hemi!

4.8/5.3/6.0 GM... run nearly forever

Ferrari flat crank v8... oh, those noises at 9 grand!

Ford modular... runs nearly forever, cheap to mod

BMW 3 liter with turbo(s)...table flat torque curve and excellent mileage with BIG torque anytime

New Gen 5.0 Ford...one [censored] of a design, could be the best ever from Ford.

There are many great (gasoline) engines but for longevity it's hard to beat:

GM 3.8
Ford 300 straight 6
SR20DE
virtually any Toyota or Honda 4 cylinder
Volvo redblock

The Ford Zetec 2.0 and GMs Ecotecs seem very durable also.

Only speaking about engines I have at least some experience with.
I love expensive supercars but I've never driven them so I feel I can't really comment.

Nissan VQ30/VQ35 (smooth as silk, reliable, powerful)
Nissan SR20 (reliable as can be and easy to mod)
Nissan KA24 (absolutely bomb proof workhorse)
Honda K20 (sounds incredible at 8000+ RPM)
Saturn LL0 1.9 DOHC (reliable and loves to rev. timing chain)
