I have been looking into oil choices for an 2007 Audi A4 2.0T. It is modified, bigger turbo + chip/exhaust etc. In my search of AUDI approved oils, they all seem to say "approved for VW 505.00 .On the very list from AUDI od approved oils, it states at the top "must be VW 505.01. I did a search and found that 505.00 is pre-2000, and 505.01 is post 2000. How big a difference is there in the two ratings. Currently I am running Syntec 5W-40, but am considering boutique oils such as Redline, Motul and ELF. I plan on doing a UOA at the 5K mark on the Syntec (changed factory fill at 1800 miles) 500 miles after turbo install.
Thanks!

If you race this car, I'd recommend RL 5w40 or 10w40. If it is your daily driver & you don't routinely beat the ever living krapp out of it, my opinion is that you should stay with a commonly available VW 502.00 rated 5w40 oil, such as Castrol Syntec, Valvoline Synpower, or Amsoil 5w40. IIRC, I believe Amsoil 5w40 oil has a dual 502.00/505.01 rating.

Not having any experience with VW 505.01 rated oils, or any Motul or Elf oils, I can not intelligently comment on any of them.

It is a daily driver, that I do flog up to redline and at high speed, for short distances. I drive 100 miles per round trip to work and often see wide open stretches of highway which seduce me into...shall we call it spirited driving!

I'd probably go with Redline 10w-40 summer, 5w-40 winter. Elf would also be good I believe. Off the shelf brands, Mobil 1 5w-40.

According to my manual, the only standard that matters is VW 502.00. Audi list of approved oils says 505.01 and therfore confused me. The key is to notice that VW 502.00 is the only standard to pay attention too, in the case of a B7 2007 A4 2.0T. I do believe that all of the oils I was looking at met the 502.00. Now, to make a choice...

I believe that the new VW 2.0t needs 503.01. 505 is for use in the diesels. My friends 06 B6 Passat 2.0t owners manual states that 503.01 oil is rocomended. Mobil 1 0w-40 meets this spec, as do other "higher end" synthetics. I don't believe that a group III oil would qualify for the 503.01 spec. The W8 Passat was the first US VW to specify the 503.01 spec, IIRC.

There's a big difference between 505.00 and 505.01 -- too big to ignore.

You need more than the Syntec, and probably more than Castrol TXT. Look into the Elf, Motul, and Lubro-Moly products meeting 502.00 and 505.01.

I know you're not concerned about warranties, only longevity. Do your research.

There you have your answer! Let's make it more complicated so that buster can say how VW makes finding the proper oil spec impossible for 99% of VW and Audi owners.

1. Show that list. There is much misinformation out there.
2. VW 502 and VW 505.01 are not mutually exclusive. VW505.01 is sanctioned in engines that require VW502. There is no conflict. The recently updated VW502 spec may also now require a VW502 spec oil to also meet VW505.01.

Exactly.

I deleted all the motor oils that I'm pretty sure are NOT sold in North America, and left some that might or might not be. This is from the official list.

I know the Shell products are not available, but left them because the Quaker State product is, from what I've heard, EXACTLY identical to the Shell.

The Liqui-Moly products are sold under the Lubro-Moly brand in North America.

There was a Mobil 1 5w40 on the list, but it's not sold in North America. The only Mobil 1 that meets 502.00 is the 0w40.

I am not sure which Motul oils are available.
