Bought a new 2022 Sprinter 2500 4X4 with OM642 3.0 diesel engine last year. These things do not come standard with an oil dipstick, so I immediately purchased and installed one. See picture of factory fill oil at 325 miles. I did my first oil/filter change at 5,000 miles even though Mercedes-Benz recommends 20K mile OCI. I did not feel comfortable going 20K especially with a new engine breaking in. UOA looked OK to me. I'm almost to 10K miles now, so I'm getting ready for my 2nd oil change, but I'm looking for some insight from others.

The owner's manual states that I can use oil that meet the following specs
228.51
229.31
229.51
229.52

What are the pro's and con's of each oil spec? What oil is everyone else running in their 3.0 diesels?

I would just get Mobil 1 ESP as it meets all the 229.xx specs and it's readily available. AutoZone carries it in my locale. If you change at 10k, it's not going to make any difference if you choose 228.xx or 229.xx oils.

Thanks for a quick response! I was thinking a readily available oil would be a great choice.

M1 ESP 0W-40? 229.31, 229.51, 229.52
M1 ESP 0W-30? 229.31, 229.51, 229.52 also VW 507.00 for my VW TDIs
M1 ESP 5W-30? 229.51, 229.52 also VW 507.00 for my VW TDIs

What filters are being used? MB OE? Hengst? Mahle? Mann? Bosch? Fram? WIX? STP?

I put a fair few miles on my 2016 S350d with this engine

Bulletproof engine IMHO

I ran with a 7/8k oil and filter interval

Usually with Mann or Hengst filters, though I think I used a Bosch aswell, whichever was in stock at EuroCarParts.

Hopefully you don’t have the fuel filter in the same place as on the A Class, where it’s mounted in the V of the engine and is almost impossible to change without the plastic pipes going brittle and cracking when you move them out of the way.

On the S Class the fuel filter change interval is something like 80/80k miles, I can’t remember

I maintained at the Dealer until the car was 4 years old and then switched to a specialist.

So I would change oil and oil filter at half the manufacturer interval of 15.5k

Did nearly 30k miles in the last 6 months of ownership and car never used a drop of oil.

I wouldn’t have sold it if I had a choice as the facelift W222 has the straight six which isn’t as reliable as the V6

5w30 meeting the Merc spec, 229.51 if memory serves, though there was quite a few specs that were acceptable in my 2016

I used Castrol Edge because I could get 8 litres in Costco for around £50.

The 2016 still had the dipstick, in the UK market

When I rejoined the NHS during Covid half the Ambulances were 518 Sprinters, these were doing 70/80k miles a year and not unusual to find one with 350k after 5 years.

I'd stick with the 5w30 flavor of M1 ESP. It carries both 229.51 and 229.52 specs, can be found at most local auto parts places and has proven to be good oil at a good price.

Another one to consider is a Wal-mart special :D the Pennzoil Platinum Euro L, which is 229.51 approved and also great oil at an even better price. I run both in my OM651 and it hasn't skipped a beat in over 130k miles.

I used ESP 5-40 in my 08 642. Never used any oil until I used a esp5-30 one time. 5-6k oil changes. Used Mann/Mahle filters. One time I went 9500 on the oil and my iron was pretty high. Mine didn’t have DEF fluid.

I can’t remember who makes the Merc OE filter.

It will either be Hengst, Bosch or Mann to be honest

I would never use a cheap filter, no point you can get a quality filter for next to nothing

I have 55k on my 22 4x4. Did the 1st change at 10k and been doing 15k changes. Mine only gets used on weekend for long trips pulling a small cargo trailer. Just did the fuel filter, trans, rear ends and transfer case. Everything is pretty straightforward, just buy the right tools. Congrats on getting one, I like mine a lot and never thought I'd own a euro vehicle in my lifetime.

229.52 Seems to be the best overall protection out of your selection. I'd grab any oil that had that performance spec. As for filter go check out the parts stores & see what extended mileage filters they offered. Microgard 10k have been excellent quality if made by premium guard. Purolators have more information about them otherwise OEM. Just go take a look at several at your local auto parts stores.

I hope to put some more miles on mine. I like doing my own maintenance when I can. I like European vehicles. I own and have owned many VWs and Audis over the years. This is my first Mercedes.

I would run PP Euro L 5w30 but I run more sopus than I do Mobil 1. My kid ran it in his Volvo C30 2.5l turbo and for 7k oci it never used a drop. With Castrol and Mobil 1 it used up to 2qts in 7k so we stuck with the Euro L.

I decided to order one of each of the "Premium" filters for the OM642. I was quite disappointed in the poor appearance of the Mercedes-Benz OEM filter. It was almost triple the price of the others and had the most inconsistent end cap assemblies. I was also dismayed to find that both the Bosch and Continental filters were "Made in China". I have used Bosch and Continental filters on other vehicles in the past and had considered them to be a premium European brand.

Why is the Bosch factory being in China an issue?

They will use the same materials, same manufacturing processes and same quality control as if they were made in Europe.

If the consumer wasn’t so price focussed then they wouldn’t have had to reduce costs.

So is this a Manufacturer issue or a consumer not wanting to pay issue ?

I will pay extra for quality. I do not think of Made in china as quality. The filter material on the Bosch has a fuzzy dusty debris that sheds and falls off when handled. I returned it.

Companies move to China so greedy shareholders and CEOs can afford Mega-yachts and private islands

No they do it so consumers who prioritise price over quality can still afford to buy a premium brand filter.

Private Yachts and Private Islands?

Are you delusional?

I assume you refuse to buy an iPhone because it’s Made in China?

iPad? Made in China

MacBook? Made in China

What about Amazon?

You refuse to purchase in that website because Mr J Bezos just bought a Mega Yacht so big they had to dismantle a bridge to get it out

I assume you refuse to use any Microsoft product?

Because, Billionaires innit
