Hi Guys,

Purchased a set of wheels OEM/VW

Stock size tire on them is 265 50 19

is 275 45 19 a ok alternative ?

there is more choice in 275 45 19

Should I stick with 265/50 or its safe to go with 275/45

Car is AWD.

Wheel sizes - offset (ET) in mm
Tire specifications
Front/Rear:
8.5J x 19 ET 59

275/45/19 has a smaller overall diameter than the stock tire. If you want to remain at stock diameter (which you should - otherwise your TPMS may complain), then 295/45/19 would be the closest alternative.

However, tire selection in that size is very limited. Besides, the minimum recommended rim width for such tire would be 9.5", so it wouldn't fit well anyway.

A 275/45 will have a shorter rolling radius than the 265/50, and will make the speedometer read fast by about 7%. Are there a lot of potholes in your locality? The shorter sidewall height of the 275/45 wouldn't protect your wheels as well.

When I go 1 cm wider to have more selection, I prefer to keep the profile the same.

It is a slightly larger wheel in Diameter, as I prefer a more comfortable ride.

Here is my example:

I own a Honda Fit, and OEM size is 175/65r/15.

This tire is very hard to find and there is very little selection.

So, when I go buy Winter tires, I choose 185/65r/15. The diameter is 1/2" larger IIRC.

That means the car has 0.25" more ground clearance. So I like that for deeper snow, as Montreal can get real dumps.

But also you get a softer ride, technically speaking. Real world difference is probably not much.

If you prefer a stiffer ride, drop down in the aspect ratio when you go wider.

TPMS is not an issue because I can adjust from on board computer the size.

Currently factory stock rims are 255 55 18

I might just stick with 265 50 19

Well, should have said so at the beginning.

There is only about 1% difference in diameter between this and 275/45/19. But why are you looking at this particular size? Are tires in this size cheaper than 265/50/19?

Is there any particular reason for doing this? Tire selection?

I know that 255/55-18 has a wide variety of tires to choose from! Everything from max performance summer tires to off-road truck tires!

255 55 18 was turned to winter size.
And I got 19"

275 45 18 is cheaper and better selection

So Stock:

255 55 18

New 275 45 19 vs 265 50 19

I'm a lite afraid off 275 on 8.5 rim but many tire companys say its OK.

First, what year, make, and model vehicle are we talking about?

Second, what does the vehicle placard say about the original tire size and inflation pressure?

Without those bits of info, we really don't know enough to answer your question.

I'd be hesitant to run a 275/45R19 on a 19x8.5 wheel; it'd look 'pinched' to me in my opinion. Tire and Rim Association as well as ETRO says that you need a minimum of a 8.5" wide wheel to run a 275 wide tire at the 45 aspect ratio, with a 8.5-10.5 approved rim width range. With a 275 wide tire, it is recommended to run it on a 9-9.5" wide wheel at that 45-series profile. Also to mention that it appears most tires in the 275/45R19 have a load index of 108 whereas the 265/50R19 generally have a load index of 110.
