Thermal printers, anyone on here mess with them?

I do a lot of selling on marketplace and eBay so does my girlfriend. I recently scored a no name thermal label printer for $5 at the local goodwill, I found and got the sketchy Chinese software it originally came with working on my computer and a stack of thermal labels from UPS. Now I need help fine tuning it so it actually prints something useable.

I've tried playing with the speed and density settings but I can't seem to get it in the sweet spot where it works good enough. My labels are either so faded they're unusable, or the printer tries to go too dark and burns the paper, causing it to stick to the print head and jam the printer.
