After spending two weeks trying different universal remotes and tracking down Sharp Service technicians that didn't have a clue to why my remote would not work, I found the solution.
First, to check that the remote is sending a signal, aim it at the camera of your cell phone. the blinking light will show up on the camera screen.
If that is working, the problem is the receiver in the set. Unplug the TV, wait a few minutes (I didn't time it) and plug it back in.
At least it worked for my Sharp flat screen LC42D85
A whole lot cheaper than a service call.
