Synthetic oil causes a camshaft sensor to go bad?

I actually had that happen on our '04 Audi A4 1.8t. The timing chain on the rear of the motor between the two cams jumped a tooth due to the tensioner chain guide plastic disintigrating. The error code was cam position sensor and it had low(er) power output. Turned out one cam was a tooth off. New tensioner and chain guides and traded that sucker in not knowing for sure if the valves ever touched the pistons. Of course the dipstick tube broke, the hood release broke and the clutched alternator pulley all went during the three weeks we spent looking for a replacement car - another $800 during the search. The dealer called us after the trade in to tell us the front brakes were not working. We appologized and said they worked when we dropped it off (they did). That car really went downhill after 50K.

Update:

The CEL code for the camshaft sensor has returned!

She has an appointment for the 18th to drop it off to the dealer. She's not driving it at the moment and while it seems to be running smoothly overall (CEL aside), she's trying to err on the side of caution.

I'll update you after the 18th.
