Some of you have noted that certain retailers have kept certain oils on their shelves for an unusually long period of time, like a decade.
The local K-Marts have a bunch of SJ Syntec, which they appear to finally be considering perhaps putting on clearance.
My question is, would an SJ Syntec be a Grp IV base oil, and hence something special, or was US Syntec already made with a Grp III base at the time the SJ spec was current?

SJ is when Castrol made the swtich from PAO to Group III. If you want PAO Syntec you've got to find SG and SH.

Group III as G-Man says. Ah the good old days....what did people do before BITOG?

I'll tell what we did before BITOG...we sludged our engines with Pennzoil...We knew that if we switched to synthetic our seals would no longer seal...we knew 10w40 would sludge into nothingness...we added a quart of ATF to crankcase... for "cleaning"...we knew that one must not go beyond 3000...I can keep going...
