Subaru Branded Oil Filters at Walmart? Hmmmm MP7317?

I was at Walmart today and saw a Subaru oil filter on the shelf for the first time. I opened it up and said hmmm this looks very familiar! I pulled a SuperTech MP7317 off the shelf and compared them. I knew it! C’mon now Subaru! We can get the better ST MP for almost 1/2 the price!!

Every blue Subaru OEM filter of that model I have used had the word "ENGINE" stamped on the top.

Whip City Wrencher opened the supertech 1.5 years ago. The seam had some glue issues. Hopefully the QC issue is now solved.

Purchased this filter from WM yesterday was in box and wrapped in plastic same as the ones I have been using for years.

I was hoping to open it and find the black Tokyo Roki Japanese made filter. I’d definitely run the ST. Near 1/2 price and silicone ADV

It looks like their heights, mounting gasket tapping plate are identical. Different color anti drain back. It would be interesting to see if they share the same media and by pass valve.

I noticed Toyota, Mopar and Motorcraft oil filters on a Walmart shelf.
There may have been additional name brands but I wasn't looking.
It did appear that there was more shelf space occupied by name brand filters than 'usual'.

They've had those for years. Recently they've added Hyundai/Kia, Subaru, and Honda. At least with the Honda filter, but this has been a couple years, the dealer was actually cheaper than WM.

Good catch, I have zero issues running ST MP 20K rated oil filters on my vehicles. Even have a regular ST white can filter on my zero turn at the moment. Just cant beat the price.

I’ve seen that as well. Many consumers don’t know that these filters are the same as the cheaper filters on the same shelf.

This is what every genuine Subaru 15208AA15A filter I have used looks like. As @Lubener points out, they are always stamped with "ENGINE" on the end.

Pick one, Subaru changed their markings and packaging or ST did and maybe changed baseplate gasket. And how does a Subie baseplate compare to the ST?

Yeah I wish I had a flashlight with me. I wanted to show the inside was identical as well with the plastic core.
