I have some old home VHS videos that I transferred to DVD using a standalone DVD recorder (The type you connect to a TV) and I am trying to save the video from that DVD to my pc's hard drive and I can't figure out how.

Any suggestions?

There are a lot of options available, and I am not an expert. The commonly used term for what you want to do is "DVD ripping." You might try searching that on google to find a free bit of software that will allow you to rip into some commonly used video format such as .avi

I like DVDShrink to rip the dvd, and handbrake to compress it down for my iphone. They're both free and relatively easy to use.

Handbrake is great. The .264 codec will save you some space.

If you want to rip encoded commercial DVDs you need an add-on but HB alone will do what you want to from your home burnt DVDs.
