I was too lazy to change out the 180 thermostat for the stock 195 this past winter so I decided to try a 5-20. This oil saw cold temps(-5F to +10F mornings)and sat a lot due to high gas prices,I used a Sentra for commuting.Oil was in service from January 12th to May 7th of 2007.It also saw a bottle of RL S1 fuel system cleaner and an intake manifold spray cleaning. Air filter was changed near end of interval with same Wix paper #46077,17,418 miles on old air filter. Baldwin B2-HPG over sized oil filter,1 quart, giving me a total sump cap of 6.5 quarts.1/2 quart make up oil added.PP 10-30 went back in with Amsoil EAO42 stock sized(.5 quart)oil filter. Also replaced 180 stat with stock 195.Used Blackstone Labs this time.

Not bad at all for the wrong application. Meaning not recommended by Dodge.

I agree! I just figured that at a lower temp stat the 5-20 would be like the 10-30 I have in there now with the 195 stat. During winter it STAYS at 180.Even with the 180 stat in summer it still creeps up to 210,especially when I tow uphill, then the 5-20 would really give Dodge a headache!

Thank you for sharing this. I'm planning to move to Fairbanks Alaska next month and have been thinking about using Amsoil 0W-20 for the extreme winter months in my 04 Dakota with the 4.7 eng.
They specify 5W-30 for this engine for 04 but for the last couple of years they specify 5W-20 for the same engine.
I called Dodge to see if they back-spec'd the 5W-20 and they couldn't come up with an answer so finally just said "go by your owners manual". I would follow this advice and be done with it but with temparatures dipping below -40 and not being able to plug in the truck everytime I shut it down, it could prove to be very advantatious to be able to use the Amsoil 0W-20.
It appears from your single run of PP 0W-20 that it might be a better bet for a Fairbanks winter.

Thanks Again!
