Then you have all those VW bugs that had air cooled engines and just a reusable metal screen for a filter and they live long lives if you kept them full of oil and changed it from time to time.

I mean obviously it is your money and you can spend it how you see fit but I just can not understand why anyone would put a $10-$12 filter on a motorcycle engine or a car or truck for that matter? That would be like building an out-house out of gold bricks and hangine a swarovski crystal chandaler in it butnot installing running water or electrictity?

I'm thinking it has more to do with those vehicles that have that mileage on them don't make enough power to hurt themselves and the thrifty people who purchased them tended to keep them reasonably well mechanically maintained and drive them accordingly.

Same goes with Ford's Crown Vic's, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars with the 4.6L. I'd imagine the vast majority of those cars have more mileage on them than the other two brands mentioned. Why? Fleet usage.

If the Honda and Toyota vehicles in question were driven like the Police drive their Crown Victoria's, I somehow doubt they would last as long.... Just my opinion on the matter.

The Ford 4.6L V8 is known to be a very long lasting engine. I came across a list once that listed the longest lasting engines ever made, and the Ford 4.6L was #2.

Practicality is not a trait often found in hobbyist/enthusiast communities.

Given the choice between a $3~4 Fram/Honeywell and a $10~12 Purlux, based solely on non-technical construction observations, I'm willing to bet most Harley owners would happily hand over the extra $ for their beloved on a perceived and intangible improvement.

Now, the "Made In France" issue is another story!

Where can you buy them? Google search fell short

Just go to a Caterpillar parts/repair center?

Heres a link to the Wix site which may help you on the Escort
http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=51365
This is where i started, looking for a Cat application that took the same filter as my Harley (51348 wix)
Just really wanted to see the inside of a CAT filter as i have looked inside ost of the others as you see from my pix on photobucket.
Certainly did not expect what i saw inside this one !
Some of the engines listed using the 51365 wix may supply the purflux as oem but it would be a [censored] shoot at best.

Arguably the best filter i have seen cut open to fit a 3/4-16 mount
Will mount where a fram 3614 or napa 1348 will go.
Fits my 2006 Harley Sportster and will be installed at the next oil change !
If you dont like the color, paint it black !

Thanks for posting that picture. It was interesting to see how these filter cans are crimped on. This gave me a good idea of where (on the crimp seam) to grind the filter with the angle grinder to to remove the can without getting angle grinder filings on the media.
