I am using MC 5-20 oil and MC filter in daughters low mileage (65K) 2002 Lincoln Continental. I do 5K changes, and was wondering if I could SAFELY replace the filter every other change, at 10K. She drives about 50/50 hwy/city.

I would spend the few extra dollars and change the filter when you change the oil every time

If you really want to cheap out the whole $4 for a filter...

What does the manual say? Probably every time. Safe? Who knows. Some people skip the filter change, some manuals say you can, but everyone will say its cheap insurance to change it, and not changing it is sort of silly.

With a quality filter? Maybe.

On a unrelated car engine subject ,,I have a 26HP Briggs motor and for a tiny lil filter the package says change every 100 hours,,,But the hour meter says oil change is supposed to be every 50 hours,,These tiny filters are over 10 bucks! and i still don't wait till the 100 hour mark,,oil and filter at the same time always for good assurance

Is the dipstick tube big enough to drain oil with an oil extractor? Not having to go under the car makes changing oil simple. I may start doing every other oc filter replacements if the extractor tube fits into the dipstick tube.

Make sure Motorcraft filter is suitable for extended drains.

How about you run PYB, VWB, QSGB , Maxlife or some other quality conventional with the latest rating which meets Ford's specs.

Most if not all of the above said oil are less expensive than MC 5w20 , freely available at your local walmart , where they also have MC filters.

Should be about $4~5 less than Motocraft oil you have been using. This way , you can do 5k service , with a quality premium conventional oil with a new filter every time , and still save a few bucks.....

She drives a big car. The filter costs the same as ONE gallon of gasoline. Get my point?

Since my OCD won't let me drop it here, to answer your question, yes; in a clean engine in sound mechanical condition an FL820S should be fine for 10k.

I wouldn't even bother using OEM filter on a Briggs & Stratton engine. If you can install a longer filter I believe a Purolator 10241 fits or one for a Ford Escort instead....you can buy 2-3 of those for the cost of one B&S filter.

have you checked that briggs part # against the wix/fram/purolator/insert filter brand here, website?
I know i recently discovered that the oil filters for my neon, and my dad's cub cadet(w/ kohler motor)were one and the same filters....
you might be able to find one cheaper....

it's odd like that in my app too, the kohler manual says 100hr oci. the cub manual calls for 50 hrs, then refers you to the kohler manual for all maintenance intervals.

I believe tig.....who does 10K OCI's on his Ford's.....uses MC filters. Seems to work for him. Don't know if I would go that long on a MC filter

If it were me....I would change to a PureOne or a Fram Ultra...to do two Oil changes. IMO...both have better media.

Thank you all for the replies. I should have clarified earlier, I am not concerned about the filter (or oil) costs at all. I simply thought it would be less effort and less mess involved to change filter every other time.

Also, I heard that as the filter loads somewhat, it becomes more efficient, so it could be beneficial to a degree.

If you're just trying to make things easier by changing filters every other oil change, use a filter designed for extended OCI's. The Fram Extended Guard/Ultra will do that easily and is priced competitively for a filter of that quality.

You could probably run the MC's just fine but it's not really intended or designed for it and I see little sense in pushing your luck.

I have not done any comparisons yet but will now ,,Thank You and to the other post from---- bds 1984

If the oil has been changed regularly since new, i.e. it's not a dirty engine, you can absolutely go 10K on one filter. Money aside, I actually think it's slightly better for the engine, which is why I only change it every other change. It should in theory filter a little more efficiently as it gets older and you won't have the death rattle on startup (don't know if the modulars do that, by my Duratec sounds horrible after I change the filter).

I've cut open every 820S I've used, with 10-17K on them, and they look absolutely fine. Considering you could probably do 10K OCI's without much trouble, I'd skip the filter change if I were you...and saving money would have nothing to do with that decision.

since i have the time to do this(and i do), and i have a sort of OCD for finding this type of info....
Part Details for the Fram OCOD that should fit Briggs motors Scroll down and you will find a competitor cross reference w/ part numbers for nearly any brand you could ever want.

and i also found this thread from back in '08 on lawn tractor oil filters:(thanks Google!)
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1145561&page=3

though frankly if i read the second link right, it's just a shorter 3614, which really opens up your options, (if you have the clearances for the "taller" filter.)
as shown by This Part Detail page.
