Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner needed if Costco gas is used often

If I run Costco 87 gas often, would I benefit from fuel injector cleaner? Which cleaner agent is good? Is Lucas good? It is cheaper to get a gallon jug of Lucas for under $35 and use on weekends when I do 50+ mile drive one way to destination and there is enough city driving mixed in as well for a total of 150 miles.

Cars are:
2012 Fit Sport 180k - mostly Costco gas from new. Average mpg is 30 and long trip mpg is 35-37 mpg.

2002 Accord V6 220k miles - Mixture of Costco and BJ’s gas the last 10 years and 50k miles and Chevron, BP, and Exxon before that. Average mpg is only 20 now.

1998 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 V6 135k - Mostly BJ’s gas and average about 14 mpg.

Thanks

Lucas fuel treatment does more than just clean injectors, it also helps fuel pump longevity, however the vehicles you have listed aside from the Isuzu have pretty reliable fuel pumps.

I will say Lucas doesn't clean injectors as good as other products such as Techron, Techron uses PEA while Lucas does not for the fuel treatment although they do have other products that do. Me personally I do like to run it every once in a while because it hurts nothing, certainly wouldn't hurt to get a gallon if you intend to use it.

Costco gas is a high-quality, Top Tier fuel. There is no need to use a cleaner unless you know your injectors are dirty or somewhat clogged. And if that's the case, maybe removal and a professional cleaning would be a better choice.

Given the shady business Lucas is up to with their "oil stabilizer" garbage, I wouldn't use their products if you paid me.

Generally, as noted, you shouldn't need injector cleaner when using Top Tier fuels. If you feel that you absolutely must use one, IIRC, the Gumout stuff has PEA and is readily available, if you want something more boutique, there's AMSOIL or Redline.

2002 Accord fuel economy has been dismay the last 3 years, dropping by 4-6 mpg on average. I am thinking about taking it in a long road trip to a casino 100 miles away to see what is the true highway mpg as it doesn’t get driven more than 4 miles most of its trips with a rare occasional jaunt to the office 30 miles away.

The short trips are likely why your average has dropped. City miles and cold weather idling is a killer.

Redline SI-1, Gumout black bottle, or Techron contain the most PEA, which is what works. That 100-mile trip is the perfect trip to use it, especially if you Andy Granatelli it on any on-ramps 😉

Chevron does mention that their gas with Techron contains only 10% of what a Techron bottle dumped into a full tank does.

With that in mind, I did start using Shell gas in my older Jag and it "fixed" a 5 year troublesome injector that would not squirt at idle, when temps were well below freezing. I had been purchasing gas at non Shell stations and getting 87 octane when paying for 93.

Problem solved with Shell fuel. So maybe there is some validity to quality fuel.

If you want to clean the injectors, use a quality product like Chevron Techron or Redline. You probably don't need it since you use top tier fuel. Just stay away from snake oils because they won't do anything positive for you.

I would just continue using a top tier fuel and move on. There’s no need in trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist by wasting money on a bottle of injector cleaner. 🍻

using Costco top tier gasoline in 87 and 93 octane for several vehicles since 2013...no fuel related issues noted on any vehicles I am responsible for...on occasion I use Chevron Techron but have stopped for the last year as I've had no known issues...

I do a double dose of Chevron Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner if I buy or take care of a vehicle that initially has an unknown history for me (used vehicles)...

Good luck with your choice

Bill

Is "Top Tier" just marketing? Or does it actually meen anything?
This might help you a bit. Why not read through it? It can help you better understand Top Tier and may help foster more questions. I am exclusively a Top Tier user.

Is it possible to buy non top tier fuel?

It certainly is. Some majors and regional brands may not use Top Tier, as might many small, independent stations.

Here is the most recent list of Top Tier brands. If your gas is not on the list it's most likely not Top Tier.
