Jeeps are like that hah hah.

You're talking the classic Cherokee, right? I'd consider 98, 99 optimum. 2000 and 01 suffered from head problems, even if fixed they could have caused some damage (and perhaps the original reason for this thread).

I've seen no evidence of coolant in the oil. When I purchased it, the PO told me he'd changed oil last July (2011), this was March, so if he was being truthful I should have seen coolant evidence on the dipstick and/or when I drained it. Just normal dirty oil.

However, the cooling system was badly sludged since no one had ever flushed out the factory coolant. I replaced the rad, WP, hoses, t'stat, and thermostatic fan, completely hosed out the block when the WP was off, & flushed the heater core. Runs in the normal range even in 100 deg. heat, and no coolant loss.

Yeah, this thing was a real gem. I should be prohibited from buying used cars! Still, as Toros says, they are good trucks. I find it to be just the right size for chasing Mustang parts, hauling from Lowes, and dealing with traffic and tight parking places.

I would not rule out he head having been changed, but I can't see any evidence that was done. As I'd said in the OP, the Jeep specialist I talked to said this year-model's cam bearings going bad at this mileage are not unheard of, regardless of maintenance.

Did't the 99s have some sort of major engine component quality issue too?

99 in the cherokee xj still had the distributor head, which is the good head.

but 99 in the grand cherokee wj had the 0331 head with out a distributor. this is the questionable head.

99 in the xj is one of the optimal years. mike

Just completed the OC on my 2001 Cherokee Sport. Used the NAPA Gold filter and 5.75 quarts of Super Tech 10w-40 High Mileage.

Oil pressure is initially at 50 at idle...which is higher then normal but it's not fully warmed up. Usually it settles in around 15 at idle and about 45 at 2000rpms.Does not lose or burn a drop between OCIs.

I leased one of those (the Sport) for 3 plus yrs in 2001, so it was the 2001 model. I loved that truck and regret turning it back in. No engine trouble at all and used the Mobil 1 in 5/30 weight that it called for doing 6k OCI. Only gripe I had was the tail lights would stop working at times. They finally figured the short or problem out after bringing it back to the dealer two or three times. That thing was a torque monster for a 6 cylinder. If I ever saw a great deal on a used one in my area, I would probably pick it up. It was a nice solid vehicle.

WATCH OUT, I went looking for another Cherokee(Back-Up)in 2005 in addition to the 1984(1st Year) Cherokee I already had. I currently own 7 XJs now, two 1984s, a 1987, a 96, a 99, a 2000, and my Beloved SilverStone Metallic 2001. I have had four other XJs in this time also(a 88 auto, a FREE 1985 with the AMC 4 Banger 5 speed, a 96 auto and a 88 5 speed). They can grab at your Soul, and make you not want to drive anything else. 1999 is a good year, with the last of the HIGH Flow 0630 cylinder head that has good durability, last of the distributor and wires, last of the tubular headers, last of the HIGH Pinion DANA 30 front axle, last of the Slip fit connections in the exhaust system(2000 on are the Real bugger flange connections), last of the Aisin AX-15 5 speed(2000 and 2001s get the Uber Rare NV3550 5 speed that is maby a bit tougher) and just generally Well Built Cherokees from that year. My 99 is a two wheel drive, that is the fastest XJ that I have ever owned. Alot less parasitic drivetrain loss, IMHO, 22+MPG on the HighWay, 0-60 under 6 seconds. Thinking of selling her, but cant seem to do it. Only if I really Need to,...KnockonWood.

What is the purpose of your post? It's not clear what point you are trying to convey. Your initial statement is:"watch out"...watch out for what??

Well only to run down his/her inventory of Jeeps owned, what was the relevance of the post?? It provided zero info. relative to the original topic and even less so to the side tracked topic(s).

He always has good Jeep info. I had already suggested a 98-99, and above he made a strong case for a 99. Very relevant to what you asked I thought. The rest simply validates that he knows what he's talking about when it comes to Jeeps.

Ok, lets see who can [censored] the farthest...Whats the purpose of my post? Well, Toros, you asked what the strengths and weaknesses of 1999 Cherokees were. You asked for a recommendation of what were good years for a Cherokee. I wrote what I know about 1999 Cherokees.
