What is the best oil to use in the hydraulic system of a log splitter, I've heard you can use hydraulic oil or dextron transmission fluid (ATF)

An Anti-wear hydraulic oil is best. For your area, an ISO 32 or an ISO 46 AW oil should work well. Grease the slides with a #1 or softer grease and it should give you many years of service.

You can use automatic transmission fluid if hydro fluid is hard to get

Tractor hydraulic fluid works well. Most of them are Multi-viscocity
