Just Bought My Dream Car

My 135i makes full torque from 1200 RPM on up. My saab too. Its nice, but the diesel feels different, not sure why but to me it does. Not as rapid buy more subtly powerful.

Weird. Wasn't showing up for me yesterday.

Congrats on the new ride - the new E-class Bluetecs are very nice cars!

I have to agree. Diesels just seem more relentless in power application... more of a powerful swell that continues growing than a quick burst of power.

Hey,thanks for the congrats. It is a very nice "ride".

As for "relentless",a year or two ago Jeremy Clarkson test drove a BMW 5 Series (European version...not available here) that featured the same 3.0 litre diesel that my "d" had. While trying to get it up to 155mph (its rated top speed) he commented "it's not exactly electric, but it *is* relentless".And,IMO,that's the perfect word to describe my "d".I've got less than 1000 miles on my Bluetec so I'm going real easy on the accelerator but I've have seen hints that it,too,is "relentless".

The MB literature I've read suggests that 5w-30 (e.g.,Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30) is only suitable for temps up to 86 degrees and for higher temps 5w-40 is advised (or required). Can anyone confirm that this is the case for their current-day diesels?

I have the MZB GL 320 CDI, and I use Mobil 1 5w40 ESP which is approved to 229.51

You can use Delvac LE 5W30
http://www.mobil.com/Lithuania-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENCVLMOMobil_Delvac_1_LE_5W-30.aspx
which is a 228.51 oil, not a 229.51. But 228.51s are allowed in Mercedes DPF diesels:
see
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolistenmain.php?session_id=&navigation_path=&language_id=1
sheet 223.2, p.3
The Delvac 1 LE has a high 100C vis of 12.2 and a very high TBN of 12.6, despite ash of 1.0% and P The only problem: you have to order it from Europe in 20L jugs, and it is not cheap with shipping.

Does it have (I guess it does) a DPF? If it does then I believe the oil needs to meet 229.51.

If 229.51 is required then I would choose Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 or 5W-40.

All oils above are 5W-30, 10W-30 or 5W-30. If the owner wants to use 5W-40 then I believe he needs to look at 229.51 oils.

Oh yes, it is true they are all xW-30.
But that is a trivial difference particularly since Delvac 1 LE is at the high end of the 5W30 spectrum with a 100C vis of 12.2. Far more important IMHO is the low TBN (~6.4) of the 229.51 oils vs the TBN of an E6/E4 oil like the D1 LE (12.6) which gives it at least triple the lifetime to drop to a TBN of 2.5-3.0.
My experience with 229.51 oil (Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W30) was that in a 9L sump, 3.0L motor (BMW X5 35d) its' TBN had dropped to 1.5 in 10K miles and TAN rose to 4.83. It was not an encouraging experience. A 2nd trial for a 9K OCI gave the same results.
If a mfg allows the use of a superior oil (228.51, particularly if it meets ACEA E4 as well as E6; which means TBN>12), I would use it.
ACEA "E" oils, even 5W30, all have HTHS>3.5.
BTW I see a lot of 10W40s in your list!

Should have been: All oils above are 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40.

Sorry, I'm human.

You're in NH and Pep Boys has four stores in NH. And they should carry Mobil 1 ESP Forum M 5w40, which meets the requirements for the newest MB CDI engines.

But... I haven't been in a Pep Boys in the last year, so I can't say for sure that they still carry that particular oil.

I don't think that that's correct.*Everything* I've read (including official MB literature) indicates that 229.51 is required. My Bluetec not only has a DPF but it also has the DEF system (aka: "AdBlue") which,I assume, necessitates a particular oil which, for example, might be different than earlier diesels.

Correct...I was just in a Pep Boys in Massachusetts (yuk!) the other day and stocked up on ESP Formula 5w-40.They also carried the 5w-30 but I've already got a supply of Fuchs 229.51 approved 5w-30 (less that $7/litre...not bad at all) so I passed on it.

What car did you actually just buy?

Except, perhaps, for reasons of fuel economy 5w-40 would certainly be preferable to 5w-30 for hot weather driving but I'm wondering if MB *requires* it.I'm familiar with Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 from my days with my previous diesel...a BMW 335d and,as you said,it is available at Pep Boys (I was just there today).Basically I'm trying to get a supply in at a discount...like the $6.80/litre I just paid for Fuchs 229.51 approved oil (shipping included).I suppose I'll just buy some Mobil 1 ESP 5w-40 at Pep Boys at $8.50/litre for peace of mind (they were out of the 5w-40 today).

I bought the '11 E350 Bluetec..3 litre V-6...210hp...400 ft lbs of torque.Much more refined than was the 335d's engine but not quite as zippy.
castrol slx @ bmw dealer can be had for $6.25 good luck

The reference I gave looks "real official" to me. Have you looked at it?

It's better than that. Peak torque is maintained from 1,600-2,400rpm.

Sweet ride, congratulations.

True,it's not just *at* 1700 (or 1600) rpm. That torque is what sold me on my first diesel,my 3 Series.I'm a rather sedate driver (hey,I'm getting old) but it's still nice to know that you can pass on the Interstate...effortlessly...when needed.Chances are you've seen the same with your TDI.

I can do that in my 82 300CD... Heck, I can do that at reasonable speeds in my 81 240D.

YOURS is better than effortlessly Id say.

Did you get rid of the 3 series? How would you compare the two? Care to write it up in the vehicles section?

I just got a new 135i last year. Next car might be a 335d, though ive always loved the w211 CDI.
the m57 is rated at 265hp with 425lbs tq. In the 3er it's a monster.

Hey,anything's possible.But the manual says 229.51,so that's what I'll go with.

Trying not to get aggressive, but have you looked at the Mercedes Operating Fluid Specifications?. And good luck with 229.51 fluids, if you do a UOA you will find that TBN is severely depleted after 10K miles.

I haven't looked at the specs and, given that I'm a rank amateur when it comes to chemical (and mechanical) engineering,it probably wouldn't do much good if I did.I hope to keep my Bluetec for 75K miles (or more) so one thing I'm planning to do is double up on MB's OC requirements....6 months or 5K miles.I'll be sticking with whatever oil MB requires for as long as it's under warranty (4 years,50K miles). After that I might consider other options if knowledgeable folks reccomend them.

And just out of curiosity I see in your sig that you have a BMW diesel. My previous ride was a 335d so I'm familiar with BMW's "LL-04" oil spec which,it would seem,is *very* similar to MB's 229.51.Do you use "LL-04" spec oil in your BMW diesel?
