HVAC has the biggest bunch of thieves that I’ve ever seen in any trade.

Years ago I was chastised on here because how dare I question the rates that mini split installers were asking. They have costs of doing business you know… they have to go to a distributor to pick up the equipment, you know…. They have to keep up licensure you know…They are massively (trying to) rip you off. An entire evap coil in chassis can be had for $600 delivered, call it $700 with some metal/work, and it doesn't take half a day to install it, so they want $2300 in labor for a few hours work.
They fake it enough to pay for a 2500HD diesel pickup with fancy tires.I think some of them are just straight up incompetent and operating on the "fake it till you make it" principle.

I are HVAC contractors in the same category as roofers and transmission repair. Meaning they they always want to replace everything and never repair anything, and you are way better off DIY.
Those of you with this experience are probably always calling the cheapest, lowest quality contractors. The contractors who have excellent reputations don't operate like this.
It's not like I have any idea what it's going to cost when I get an estimate. Those of you with this experience are probably always calling the cheapest, lowest quality contractors. The contractors who have excellent reputations don't operate like this.

That estimate presentation is embarrassing. The only thing that could make it worse would be if it was written on a McDonald's napkin.

Not enough people. I've done it. I replaced solenoid once. If I had brought it to a shop the only service they would have offered was a complete rebuild. Replaced a solenoid in 2013 and drive the car until September 2020 and still had the original transmission in the car (except for a solenoid, a valve, and the filter) when I junked it.B) - Who in the world is DIYing internal transmission repair?
The heat exchanger of most gas furnaces have long warranties. That's just for a compressor. Nobody gives a 10 year warranty on anything else.
What brand? Trane for example has a 10 year warranty on parts. This is a house in Florida that I have rented out Jan, Feb and Mar to the same people the last 10 years. Had the whole a/c system replaced in 2015 by a large local a/c contractor. One year ago when the a/c quit, they installed sealer and recharged so it was good while the tenant was there. This year the tenant said the a/c is warm so I sent the same people out to check it out. They say the evaporator in the air handler in the attic is leaking due to rust. $3000 to replace it but over a month to get the part. Of course, they offered to replace the entire system for $9000. This is a 3.5 ton unit and in 2015 I paid like $4700. Are they ripping me off?
I see this ad on Craigslist that has that size for $4,500 from a small company. https://sarasota.craigslist.org/sks/d/sarasota-ac-service-repairs-new/7593875545.html Is that a red flag?
