He's not going to drive for Ferrari. They've already secured Alonso and Massa. He knows he's not wanted by Ferrari atm.

Who said he's going to drive for Ferrari? However, Ferrari had a contract with him through 2010, therefore, they had to pay him to break the contract.

Last year. I think I actually cried when I heard the news. Subaru is rally, for them to quit was just unbelievable.

This probably has as much to do with the WRC going to a Group A front wheel drive only formula next year (ironically, in a probably vain attempt to save the teams' coin) as it has to do with the 'economic/market downturn'.

Lotus chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne has confirmed World Series by Renault runner-up Fairuz Fauzy for a role next season - and expects him to graduate to a full seat.

Despite being based in Norfolk for now, Lotus has predominantly Malaysian support in the shape of the Tune Group and an acting team principal from the Far Eastern country in AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes.

Fernandes has made little secret of his desire to one day put a home-grown driver on the grand prix grid, and former GP2 Series contender Fauzy fits the bill.

However Gascoyne played down speculation that the driver is in line for a grid spot in 2010, with Toyota refugee Jarno Trulli and another experienced campaigner such as former world champion Jacques Villeneuve expected to turn out for the legendary team of yesteryear.

"Fairuz will be in the team, probably as a reserve driver or a test driver," Gascoyne - making a return to F1 following a year off after parting ways with Force India - told Malaysian newspaper The Star.

"He's got the talent, but we don't want him to 'crash and burn' in the race because of his inexperience."

Gascoyne compared the situation to that experienced by Fernando Alonso, who moved up from testing duties to win World Championships with Renault.

"Take Alonso, for example," he said. "He was signed as a test driver at Renault but didn't get a race seat until after three years, then went on to win trophies.

"That's exactly what we want with Fairuz - for him to have enough experience - because racing in Formula One is a much higher level than he's used to.

"If you ask any young driver if they're ready for F1, their answer will always be 'yes' but, at the end of the day, it's the experience that matters."

Buemi to stay with Toro Rosso
The Ferrari-powered team have yet to name their second driver, although 19-year-old Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari is expected to remain after replacing France's Sebastien Bourdais last July.

"Dietrich Mateschitz bought this team to give young drivers a chance, and this is our philosophy," team principal Franz Tost said.

"We have to stick to this philosophy, and I'm quite confident that from the middle of next year onwards we will have a good driver line-up, because then Alguersuari will know all the tracks, and Buemi is increasing his performance already."

Buemi, 21, was the top rookie last year with six points and some impressive performances.

Toro Rosso will also try out New Zealander Brendon Hartley in December, when teams are allowed to test only with young drivers.

Sister team Red Bull are due to give 20-year-old Australian Daniel Ricciardo, this year's British F3 champion, a test at Spain's Jerez circuit at the same time.

Lotus Formula One is still seeking sponsorship to help the new Malaysian team survive in its first season in 2010 despite a tight budget.

Launched two months ago as a collaboration between the Malaysian government - which holds no equity in the team - and a trio of entrepreneurs, Lotus insisted it had the means to compete.

A team director told Malaysia's Bernama news agency the company would look to attract investors from various corporate bodies, including government-linked companies.

"What is wrong with asking for sponsors from GLCs like Petronas?" said Kamarudin Meranun.

"If Petronas can sponsor a foreign F1 team, why should the national petroleum company not sponsor a local team?"

Malaysia's state oil company was a long-time backer of the BMW-Sauber team.

Lotus's start-up capital of around £28 million is a fraction of Ferrari's budget, estimated at between £200m and £250m.

However, Kamarudin insisted the team had a strategy to overcome its financial restrictions despite the recent departure of Toyota and BMW, following Honda's exit last year.

Team principal Tony Fernandes's ownership of Asia's largest budget airline AirAsia would help lower the cost of moving equipment and crew members, he added.

Foreign-based Malaysian engineers would also reduce bills.

"The (team) put up an advertisement to fill 225 posts, we received over 6,500 applications," said Kamarudin. "Most of them are from Malaysian engineering experts currently working abroad.

"They are excited with the Malaysian-owned Lotus F1 Racing and are willing to work at a lower pay. This will enable us to lower the cost."

Lotus are aiming for a roll out of the new car in mid-February to test it before the season opener in Bahrain in March.

Button visits McLaren factory

Formula One world champion Jenson Button visited McLaren on Friday, fuelling speculation he could be lining up a switch from Brawn to become Lewis Hamilton's team mate next season.

Having just landed at Heathrow (airport), Jenson made a small detour to Woking to say a quick hello," a McLaren spokesman said.

He confirmed the 29-year-old Briton, who was given a guided tour of the factory, met McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

Button is out of contract with Mercedes-powered champions Brawn, who are keen to retain him but not at any price.

Team boss Ross Brawn said earlier this week the chances of a deal being done were 99 per cent, hinting also the team might give the driver more scope to benefit from personal sponsorship.

"We can offer a higher proportion of driver freedom and that will probably be the route we will go," he said.

Button took a significant pay cut, around £5 million according to some media reports, to stay with Brawn this year after their predecessors Honda pulled out last December.

Although driver salaries are coming down as teams cut costs, Button wants his pay restored to something more appropriate to a world champion - likely to be in the region of £8m.

McLaren, with 2008 world champion Hamilton earning considerably more than that, would have no problem meeting Button's financial demands.

If Button were to join, McLaren would then have a line-up of champions for the first time since the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna and France's Alain Prost were at the team in 1989 as well as an all-English pairing.

The Guardian said Button and his manager Richard Goddard were given an escorted tour of McLaren's facilities.

"As I've said many times before, Jenson wants to drive a car which is capable of winning the next world championship," Goddard told the newspaper.

"We've been talking about possible terms for 2010 with Brawn for months and we're not being difficult or unreasonably expensive in our demands for Jenson.

"In fact, we've given up quite a lot of negotiating ground in our discussions with them."

The paper said a contract could be signed next week.

McLaren's former driver Kimi Raikkonen, who has left Ferrari, would be the Woking team's fallback if the Button deal failed. Germany's Nick Heidfeld was third in line.

"I think it's also important that Jenson wants to feel valued in whatever situation he finds himself next season," said Goddard.

"He needs to explore all the feasible options."
