as long as the well has casing through the clay down to rock you're good, otherwise the driller better have packed the borehole real well through the soil. if not the top water will find a way down the borehole quick.
 
Very true, they put some clay goop (bentonite?)down around the pipe at the top to some depth. We have drainage away from the head as well so it seems to be good so far. I imagine the clay must make a good seal eventually to the pipe.
 
Sounds like the right stuff then. The driller has been in the business for 30 years and was recommended to me by a builder friend so I'm pretty confident in the installation.
We are also thinking about a pond soon so reading about bentonite is timely!
