With a proper spliced connection, don't think twice about ruining the values it sends.
This means make a good connection, then solder it, and seal it.
 
I always buy the cut/splice ones as I drove a lot of S/B cars in the past and never had a problem, but I always make sure the car is hot before changing... Splice the new one in and test to make sure all the wires are right and the car is in close loop reach/lean switching mode. Once I'm sure it's good I solder all the connections and then use some heat-shrink tube on each wire and then one big piece of heat shrink tube over all the other heat shrink tubes to make sure it's well sealed. Never had a problem, because it was done right IMO.
