How often should I hear ruffly the compressor click on and off on a decsent warm/hot dam on max cool and on high blower? I won a 2000 Ford Ranger EXT cab. 3.0L engine. Flex Fuel.

Assuming you are attempting to check the A/C function with a hot cabin and an ambient temp of 75 degrees F or above...

If the compressor clutch is constantly cycling on and off and there's weak cooling that usually indicates a low refrigerant charge. Which also would point to a slow leak somewhere in the system. An A/C shop can quickly diagnose this.

If they find a problem such as a leaky O-ring, its best to have them replace all the O-rings (there are not that many) and then you are done with it. Once the refrigerant is removed for the first O-ring, replacing the rest is a snap.
You can also look yourself at any joints between a hose and something. Leaking refrigerant also leaks oil and the dust sticks to oil.

As they refill the system have them install a leak detector (for the next time).

AC systems will cycle faster if the ambient temps are cool, or if it is undercharged.
This is a good sign, however. It shows that things are working!

Another thing to consider as well, eventhough it is very very rare, a clog on the high side (dampener/muffler, condenser or orifice) will drive high side pressures up enough to cause the high side cutout switch to cycle the compressor. Only ran across it a few times, but...................
