Ok guys I have an overheating 85 Civic 1500 cc w/ manual trans. I just put in a gauge that reads the actual coolant temp. The sender is in the cylinder head where the original sender was located.
I think that the original dash gauge may be bad.
What actual temps in deg F are considered too hot
(redline)for this engine and what temps are considered normal?

Thanks in advance.........Lukey

Normal after it's up to temperature, depending on what temperature thermostat, 190-210 I'd say if it has a 180 degree thermostat. Too hot would be getting into the 230-240 range and above.

Those engines need to stay cool or they blow the headgasket.

IIRC the stock stat was a 170F. The end of the normal range on the guage is 215F.

Most other engines can go much hotter w/o any problems.

Does this thing have an electric fan thermoswitch? You might be able to pull that and see if a temp is stamped on it. I would regard that as near max.
