Pcv valve may have been the culprit, however M1 syns are kinda thin, I think it stopped using oil with the Castrol HM because it is thicker than the regular Xw30. If you wanna keep the engine clean, switch back to M1 but use the T&suv 5w40 in it.

My isuzu has consumed about 1qt/1000mi since I bought it. (had 144k on it then, 180k on it now)... Only time I ever actually "see" any blue in the rear views, is if I shift hard and hold throttle while dumping the clutch. It takes a pretty significant rate of consumption to actually see the results in the form of continuas blue smoke during driving. (like 1qt/100miles or so would be visible)

Try an Auto-Rx cleaning of the engine. That has greatly reduced oil consumption in two engines I've used it in.

I'd also use a good oil for 5000 mile ODI, adding makeup oil part way through, if needed.
