Hello,
This is my 2008 Volvo S40 2.5 Turbo. The engine now has 6,000 miles. The 1st number was the factory fill which I dumped at 1,000 miles. The 2nd number is Castrol Syn Tec blend and I ran that for 2,000 miles. 3rd number is this OCI which is German Castrol 0W30 and it has 3,000 miles on it for a grand total fo 6,000 miles on the engine. It seemed to have burned a tiny bit of oil as it was a hair low on the dip stick when I changed the oil? Any ideas why?

Aluminum 7/4/4

Chromium 1/0/0

Iron 29/9/10

Copper 25/6/4

Lead 2/1/1

Tin 1/0/3

Moly 2/2/2

Nickel 0/0/0

Manganese 3/0/0

Potassium 5/2/4

Boron 3/1/2

Silicon 15/9/9

Sodium 7/250/39

Calcium 1705/1948/1745

Magnesium 496/68/454

Phosphorus 810/614/836

Zinc 1039/797/1190

Barium 1/0/0

SUS Viscosity @210 56.2/53.6/59.9

cSt Viscosity @ 100C 9.11/8.35/10.19

Flash Point 380/355/385

Fuel, Water, Antifreeze all 0

Insolubles 0.3/0.4/0.3

TBN for this GC was 6.8 so I will go to 5,000 miles next I think.

You guys know why the Flashpoint was so low? It was 380 and should be at least 385 for GC. Also do you know why tin went up to 3ppm? Do you think GC will be a good oil for this Volvo?

tin from 0 ppm to 3 ppm? statistically i'd say that is the same result. you cant make big conclusions from such close numbers.

probably what's in the oil to start with i guess.

"It was 380 and should be at least 385 for GC."

I thought you said 3rd number was GC.

despite the fuel number of 0, I think you have a little fuel dilution going on.

I messed that up and can't edit now. It should have said 380 not 385.

Engine was burning oil from the start. It is just easier to notice on a longer run. Check it for top up if you run longer. Iron and copper really jumped. Maybe 3-4k ocis for the turbo.

Iron and copper dropped. Read it the other way.....1st collum was older to latest results.

Probably got sucked through the pcv valve. You'd be surprised how much oil gets pulled through the crank case vent hose and into the intake/combustion chamber, especially if you over fill it. I have a catch can on mine to seperate out the oil.

How many quarts did you use? Mine calls for 6-1/8 quarts. I usually use 6 so it shows a little low on the dipstick. In general I would not worry about a little burn at this stage. Engine is still breaking in.

Yup! 6 and 1/8th qts. It was a hair over the fill line then at 3,000 miles it was a hair low.

It was the 5w30 weight.

I would stay away from the syntec blend. Look at that viscosity after only 2k miles
