This is a repost, i put it in motorcycles first.. also the dealer stocks 0-40 on the shelf..

I just brought home a new toy, 2009 Polaris Ranger 700xp.. our local Polaris dealer just did a service on it before i took delivery of it (3 miles since last oci) so whatever Polaris puts in em its atleast fresh.. needless to say im sure not planning to let them do my future oil changes as IM A BITOG'er i do my own ! i glanced at the manual and i was shocked when (if memory serves) it calls for a 50wt.. WOW, didnt expect that.. so anyways, im going to let it ride for 50hrs or so and get some use out of the recent OCI, but by the time winter sets in here in Indiana im changing it out (Deer season) of course i will double check for the correct weight but i thought i would post here and see if there are any recomendations for brand, anyone have any experience with UTV's ? if it was yours what oil would you experiment with first? Machine has 800 miles and 160hrs of use on it.

It will get used year round, (stopped today looking at cab inclosures) and the local polaris dealer keeps 0-40 on the shelf for it, "Genuine Polaris 0-40 synthetic" at $12.xx a bottle. at the bottom of the bottle it of course said it was manufactured for Polaris.. but didnt say by who ! Indiana can reach 100'F in the summer with heat index of 115'f and the winters touch below freezing pretty often, its not uncommon for it to get in the teens for a week at a time, and dip down to single digits for a few days. every once in awhile we will see below zero, but its not to often.. this machine will be used for yard work, (chainsaw in bed hauling branches) deer hunting, a little fishing, Lots of country cruising on the Indiana backroads, and pleasure rides with my family.. I dont see any "HEAVY" duty use, but you never know.. i bought it to use it, time will tell.

Length may be a concern becuase the diameter is tight on my quad so i doubt its tighter on the rangers.

I use the wix 51356. What is the difference between it and the 51357?on their site,it looks like the only difference is the 51356 has a higher burst rating?

I use Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck in my Polaris. It's a very robust oil, with an ideal additive pack. UOA results with this oil are better than any other oil I have ever tried.

Many forum members are seeing the same thing.

I currently use Mobil 1 10W40 sports bike oil. This is a very good oil and was recommended to me by a guy at Mobil customer service. I'v been well pleased with it. However, when I use up my supply I intend to change to Mobil 1 5W40 diesel truck. I happened upon a super sale and purchased 6 gallons of it for 12.24 per gallon.

I use Castrol Syntec 5w-50. Been using it almost two years in my Polaris 550X2. I change it out every 6 months or so and use Polaris filters. I'm sure using a 0w-40 won't make any difference however.

I just did the OCI at 50 hrs, I took your advice and used the Napa filter (bought 2 actualy) at around $5.00 a filter, still cheaper after tax then buying just one Polaris filter at $12.xx

As far as the oil in concerned i was pressed for time so just put the Polaris branded synthetic in it.. very expensive in the 2 qrt jug at $26.xx. I found it funny that Polaris doesnt even put the weight on the jug. My friend (sales manager) says its the 50wt and under NO CONDITIONS should i be using anything less that the 50WT. they say "sure your welcome to put whatever brand in it you want, just make sure its syn, and its a 50wt. I could have sworn a few weeks ago he told me it was a 40wt.. kinda scratching my head. went ahead and put a fresh air filter in it as well.. Oci was no trouble, after of course i figured out where the drain plug was

Any HDEO at a fraction of the cost is more than sufficient for that ATV. I've been running Rotella 15W40 for decades in a variety of ATVs and motorcycles. Maximum value for minimum expense.

Only 2 viscosities have been recommended in Polaris engines since the early 90's, both synthetic oil.

0W-40 up to 2010 +-models
2W-50 2010

The main reason for these viscosities it the range of climates their powersports equipment is used in from high desert to the arctic, only need to use one oil.

btw - AMSOIL had Polaris and Arctic Car 50wt oils tested against their 0W-40 and found they shear down to a 40 wt in a very short period of time. Of course some will claim its bogus but its not.

In my opinion using a 0w-40 up to a 5w-50 would be fine. One poster has suggested a 15w-40. I would not feel comfortable with such a high cold start weight oil....especially in the winter. In all of the Polaris vehicles of the last several years I've never seen them recommend anything higher than a 10w-** .

I agree that for cold weather use, 15W40 is not the best choice. However, for anything above freezing it will work fine. If the operator plans to run the ATV during sub freezing and in particular sub zero temperatures, I'd recommend Rotella T-6 which is 5W40 synthetic.

Im on that site, as well as a few other ranger forums. But when it comes to specifics i like BITOG.

Just wanted to say thank you again, i pulled up this information via my Droid standing at the parts counter, Super handy ! so thank you again.

I aked this same question, the parts man stated that wix makes Napa filters, stated no difference in the two.. from the parts man.
