Motorex Cross Power 4T 10W-60 (Motorcycle)

This oil was developed in conjunction with KTM and is strongly endorsed by KTM as the oil to use in the new 690 models (Enduro, SMC). Very, very different chemistry (check out the high glycol reading) with an add pack that looks like a diesel oil. Right out of the bottle it doesn't measure as a...

KTM 690 Enduro, OEM oil, 66 miles

The motor is a 654cc fuel injected, liquid-cooled, single cylinder, four-stroke design with an 11.8:1 compression ratio, four-valve overhead cam with roller rocker levers producing 62 peak HP. It has a shared sump lubrication system shared with the six-speed transmission and uses two Eaton pumps...

    What's with the 60-weight oils?

So I have the itch for a new motorcycle and have been looking at the KTM 690 Enduro and the Husqvarna TE610. I was a little surprised to discover that both require 10W-60 motor oil. They're both liquid-cooled, so does anyone know what the deal is--why do they spec such a thick oil?

    Mobil 1 4T 15W-50

    PureOne pricing

I bought a PureOne air filter for my truck from Advance Auto Parts (via their website) before Pep Boys started carrying them out here in California. I paid about $12.50 (plus shipping) for it. It did such a good job I figured that I'd use one in a friend's car that I maintain. Checking...

    Blackstone wins oil lab shootout

I just got the latest (June 2006) issue of "The Aviation Consumer" and noticed that they did a review of six different oil labs. They picked Blackstone as the winner because of the universal averages you get in their reports, as well as their more detailed results and explanations. Congrats...

    Bosch Icon wipers

Has anyone else run into these yet? I just saw a display for them at AutoZone when I went in to pick up some Havoline for an upcoming oil change. They look like the Valeo Ultimate wipers that the Tire Rack has been selling--they're a "bracketless" design that uses spring steel to keep the blade...

Roller bearings and oil viscosity maintenance

A machinist on a motorcycle-specific forum posted the following: Both suppositions (roller bearings cause greater shear than plain bearings, and roller bearings produce greater wear metals) are new to me. Frankly, I don't see support for the latter in the UOAs over in the motorcycle UOA forum...

    Shell Rotella T 5W-40; 2,013 miles/9 weeks; Infiniti QX4

Here's the second UOA on my 2002 Infiniti QX4 (Nissan VQ35DE engine). The OCI started at 45,044 miles and ended at 47,057 miles (2,013 total miles in about nine weeks for this OCI). This was the rinse phase for the vehicle's first ever Auto-Rx treatment. Oil for this OCI was Shell Rotella T...

Ring step area lubrication and low/no oil consumption

In an article about the longevity of cylinders in aircraft applications the author claims that engines that use little to no oil aren't letting enough oil into the ring step area of the cylinder, causing a significant reduction in cylinder longevity. (In case you aren't familiar with...

    BioPerformance miracle fuel additive

Someone on a listserv I'm on is looking for folks to try a new, miracle fuel additive called BioPerformance. The product claims 35% (or better!) improvement in fuel economy. http://www.fueldoctor.mybpbiz.com/> This formerly top secret pill is now available to YOU! Be one of the first to...

    Shell Rotella T 5W-40; 6,796 miles/355 days; Infiniti QX4

My QX4 (Nissan VQ35DE engine) saw pretty hard service this past year. I normally put most of the miles on it during the ski season. The rest of the year it gets used only on weekends for shopping or camping trips. I didn't get to do much skiing or camping last year, so it usually saw only short...

    Axial vector engines

I just caught wind of this new engine design. Pretty interesting! In a nutshell: no crankshaft sinusoidal camshaft six double-ended pistons (12 cylinders) piezoelectric valves, piezoelectric fuel injection, oil cooling only (no radiator), elimination of piston rings, self-starting engine (no...

    Valvoline 10W-40; 1,733 mi.; Kawasaki KLR650

I got one of my friends to do a UOA on his KLR650: Butler Labs Analysis: From what I can figure out, it looks like the engine's doing OK but the tranny is very unhappy and that's where the Cu and Fe/Al are coming from. The Zn is getting used up trying to protect the gears. The oil is a thick...

    Shell Rotella T 5W-40; 3,925 mi.; Kawasaki KLR650

12,440 miles on the bike; 3,925 miles on this oil. I added a magnetic drain plug at the beginning of this OCI. The virgin oil figures are from Blackstone, so compare between labs with a grain of salt. The previous OCI was with an unknown oil (probably Kawasaki's OEM 10W-40) for approximately...
