    MIL spec oil

Hi guys I need help on sourcing some brand names for a MIL-L-2103C spec oil used in a Terex TR100 dump truck PTO. We are having a problem with oxidation as the sealed unit only takes 1.5lt of oil with ambient temperatures of over 40 degrees celsius here in Botswana. Any opinion on using a PAO...

    Synmax

Read, with intrest, their TDS on 'break in motor oil'. I was always led to beleive that the best runing in oils were detergent free, but according to Synmax, their oil has 'heavy duty dtergent additives'. Any comments?

    60 000 RPM engine?

Many years ago I can remember reading an article about a Canadian(?) engine manufacturer, building an engine that revved to 60 000 RPM. If my memory srves me correctly, this motor did not use rings and the only form of compression was the oil between the piston and the cylinder whitch can only...

    Castrol Transmax Z

We have a customer (Bell/John Deere) who insist on using Castrol Transmax Z in their transfer case. They claim that using any other fluid invalidates their warranty and charge an absolute fortune for the stuff ($20.00 per litre). Is there any magic in this product? From what I can deduce from...

    F1 Engine Oil Consumption

I have heard from a guy at Shell that the Ferrari engine uses a 0w5!! With the amount of heat that must get generated, that oil must be REAL thin. He also told me that the oil they use doesn't have detergents as it gets changed so frequently.

    Filtered, used base oil

Can't find a thread on this, so I hope this is relevant. A local supplier is offering hydraulic oil at RIDICULOUSLY low prices. I have approached my principal,(an oil major), to test the water with regard to getting a better price so as to compete in the market and was told to go and fly a kite...

Worst oil available in your area?

Here in Botswana (deepest darkest Africa!) you will not beleive what people buy/sell here. All of the taxis/minibusses use the CHEAPEST oil available which is generally SF/CC. There is also a brand of oil here (no names) that does not have a spec. A customer of mine put it in a Single cylinder...

    Cat 3304 engine failure

REDDOG Judging by the consistency of the muck that was in the sump, we were not dealing in microns. Rubbing the oil between your fingers, definite grains of sand could be felt. No clear evidence of abnormal dirt in the intake. We are in dispute as a third party commented that the high fuel...

    Cat 3304 engine failure

Many thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. As I stated earlier, I was seeking opinion, based on purely UOA values, what COULD have caused a failure. Here is the actual lowdown. This motor threw a rod through the block. Upon stripping the engine and removing the sump, were we in for...

    Cat 3304 engine failure

No, oil used for the (short) duration of the engine was 15w40 Ci-4 although it also carries a gasoline spec. of SL. Funny that you should mention low addative count as we have several analysis reports showing similar values that have comfortably done 450 hours.

    Cat 3304 engine failure

Many thanks, hate2work. Just what is the purpose of this forum if opinion is not asked for?

    Cat 3304 engine failure

Sorry it looks confusing, but the report was in PDF format and I transferred it into word and I must admit, it does look a mess, so here goes, retyping manually. This engine was overhauled and fitted to a Cat 120g motor grader. The engine failed (more about that later) and the customer claims...

    Cat 3304 engine failure

A customer of ours complained that his Cat 3304 engine was not running as he expected it to. An oil sample was taken and submitted to a laboratory that we use and the following report was sent to us. If anyone has any input or comments, I shall reply with my 2c worth. Many thanks guys.Analysis...

    API service category graphs

Hi all. At the previous company that I worked, I recall seeing octagonal shaped graphs showing the difference between different API specs indicating bore polish, oxidative thickening etc. in percentage form (every spec was a different colour). They were really informative in the respect that you...

    Why semi-synthetic??

Many thanks Charlie, makes more sense now. Couldn't log on to your links for w124 & ACEA, but got all the info I need from the Lubrizol site. My customer only wishes to adhere to procedures as laid out by the OEM, but I was curious as to what the difference is. Here in Africa, we have had been...

    Why semi-synthetic??

Needing to supply my local Mercedes Benz dealer, he has insisted that I supply MB 228.5 spec oil. Fair enough, but I see that this stipulation only carries an API spec of CF, whereas the "lower" MB228.3 is a CI-4?! My question is, what is the benefit of group 11 base oils if the API...
