Intuitively, it would seem that engine block sound, would be one of the best ways to (in-situ) evaluate the effectiveness of a motor oil. Is this true? It seems to me that quiet operation would be a good direct indicator of hydrodynamic clearances being maintained (no, or low metal-metal contact).

How would a straight 20w HDEO oil do in newer vehicles spec.ed for 5w20 (for summer, or warm weather operation)? It would seem that the absence of viscosity improvers could be a good thing, particularly for operations like trailer towing.
