Either this is a post to stir things up, or the guy just doesn't read or heed advice. Even in a moderate climate, people are using 5w30. Even 0w30. But why are you asking this on an oil board if you don't even pay attention to your oil cap?

Whoa whoa whoa....you're taking everything I thought I knew about oil viscosities and flipping it upside-down. I thought '...thicker...' and '...more protective...at startup.' were two different things? The engine is cold at most startups. Having a lower first number at startup is better...

I remember my Grandpa's 1986 carbureted Honda Accord LX that would rev like the dickens until a throttle blip. But even then, shifting in to gear was tricky- it seemed like the car was in as-much-as-I-can-give-but-I'm-only-a-Honda mode in terms of torque.

Does it really leak? I'd say try running the 5w20 anyways. What's the point of running thicker oil just because you think you need to? ...and if it does leak, why not fix the leak and run 5w20 anyways?
