As for the 50 weight, it does take a long time to get pumped up. A long time to be running on boundary lubrication. I would suggest 20w50 over 50 weight.
Check the bottom of the container. If its got three stars on it its Esso, if it has a stylized symbol that looks like a shell a P and a Q its Shell Penzoil Quakerstate.
I would recommend any of the Diesel truck lubricants, XD3, Delo 400 my personal choice Shell Rotella T. These oils should have the extra antiwear package that you will need for your valve train.
