Pistons are one of the most difficult parts of the engine to keep clean, and engines are more complex and sophisticated than ever. A cleaner engine is better protected and more responsive since contaminants such as soot and sulfuric and nitric acids, byproducts of the combustion process, can affect heat transfer from pistons to cylinder, and in extreme cases, can cause seizure of the piston in the cylinder. Heavy deposits forming on the underside of the piston can also cause problems with piston cooling, leading to high levels of deposit in the piston ring grooves causing them to stick, which can cause excessive cylinder wear.
