A friend who recently worked at Autozone had customers tell him that they were the same product. Can anyone tell me if this is right or wrong

all i know is that advance auto brand carb cleaner is junk. won't remove anything at all. only good for killing weeds aparrently.

AFAIK, Berryman doesn't make any of the Autozone branded chemicals. When I worked for AZ many moons ago, the carb cleaner was made by a company in Florida called Petro Chemical. Petro was purchased by a company called Amrep a few years back.

You could try sending Amrep an e-mail asking if they still make any of AZs aerosol chemicals.

IIRC, Autozone carb cleaner is methanol, toluene, and acetone. I believe Berryman B-12 Chemtool (carb cleaner aerosol) has more stuff in it: http://www.berrymanproducts.com/Portals/0/BPI MSDS/0113, 0152, 0117C, 0120C.pdf

It looks like the B-9 ChemDip is even stronger: http://www.berrymanproducts.com/Portals/0/BPI MSDS/0901, 0905, 0996.pdf

AZ's carb cleaner is decent, IMO. I used a can to spray off an engine after I had degreased and rinsed it. The methanol got the water into solution with the acetone and toluene, and made it evaporate so that no rust formed. I painted it shortly thereafter with good results.
