Mixing Mercon and Mercon V - 2005 Ford Escape

Hi,

I just brought a 05 Ford Escape with 80K miles on it. Owners manual says to use Mercon but that has been superseded by Mercon V.

I'm not sure what type of fluid is currently in the transmission, can you mix the two types of fluids?

I was just planning on draining the pan and adding the equivalent Mercon V back in. And possibly repeating this again.

So do I need to do a full flush or can I mix the 2 fluids?

No issues whatsoever. The newer Mercon V bottles that have been at dealers for years now allow it.

I don't mix them.

Ford said don't do it (TSB 98-08-08), then later changed their minds (TSB 06-14-4)

The question you have to ask is, when they made that changeover were they thinking about the longevity of your old, out of warranty, transmission? Or about cost savings in their supply chain?

I use Maxlife in transmissions that want plain old Mercon.
